Well I've been on the website of ttmaps.
And maybe that is the problem...
I'm not a noob when it comes to computers and software , but I stopped using DOS and command line inputs over 10 years ago.
A line with heaps of numbers and letters is always a source for error and it is complicated.
Of course if you use it every day you will find that it is easy and you will have all comands in your head.
Same goes for SQLite - it is much easier for a normal end user to type the necessary informations into a structured text file or over a menu directly into the database.
I've tried gdal and for a map with several hundred tiles it would kill me. And even for a single file I think it is not really an easy tool to use. It might be powerful but not user friendly.
Sqlit might be simple but ask around here how many user even know what a database is used for ,not alone using one with SQLite.
In the German Forum where I also started a thread about this proggy the feedback is poor ,because most ppl think it is too complicated to convert a map even if it is already calibrated.

For the projections used here there is another problem : So far I've found 5 completely different ones.
Some data used is far too old and some maps are completely useless except you would use them only to see your location - most small tracks are missing.
That is why I wanted to keep that whole issue small and simple by providing and using local maps in 1:50000 or 1:25000(hard to get) .
I've tested the Toolangi map and it fine for the tracks that are included-but all the interesting small ones are missing completely.
On top of it comes that uploading a big map takes forever and so far I've had no feedback whatsoever in regards to maps or coverage.
Finding good detailed maps is a hard job here and gets expensive as well.
So I started with the paper maps and think they are usable.
Even the expensive Hema Great Desert Tracks are 1:1250000 and far to big to be used as a complete set-most of the tracks in there are also covered by Tomtom...
I will upload the State maps and send you the link!

    H jcr83,

Thanks for joining us Downunder and assisting.

I haven't converted any maps, nor do I have a TomTom, however ttMaps is a fantastic development and you deserve our unreserved thanks wholehearted support.

Converting ttMaps maps is clearly not easy. Many in Australia use OziExplorer or OziCE. In Australia 25k, 50k, 100k, 250k and a whole heap of specialised raster mapping is readily available calibrated for Ozi, both free and commercial in either ecw or Ozi format or both. There are probably thousands of ready to go Ozi calibrated maps.

Ozi Explorer has excellent map calibration capabilities, and the calibration data is preserved in a simple text file; not embedded in the ecw.

Which leads to my simple question?

Would it not be better to organise the ttMap calibration data in a text file, something similar to the Ozi .map file. This would provide for a simple conversion procedure? It would enable anyone with a paper map to scan it, calibrate it in Ozi, and load it into ttMaps. Easy peasy.

If you have several hundred maps to convert, you'll spend several days with GUI tools, but with command line tools you can easily write a script to process all the files in a single command. For example, for France there are 5800 tiles to convert (at 1/25000). Australia is much larger ... You definitely can't use a GUI tool for that ...

Adding projection parameters is not for beginners. I have documented this, so that some users can do it (2 or 3 users have succeeded). The recommended way is to send me a map sample, and I add the new projection.

Would it not be better to organise the ttMap calibration data in a text file, something similar to the Ozi .map file.
That doens't change anything. The difficulty is to find the correct projection of the map (and the datum, if the map is old). Writing the coordinates into a text file or using "ECW Header Editor" to put them into the ECW file are equivalent.
The .map files of OziExplorer are much more complex than the ECW file headers.

What for example the map is a scanned image - like the Hema Great Desert Tracks and tere is no usable calibration incuded (the calibration is embedded in a special file for the CE version and OZI is keeping the format a secret) ?
All I can find out is the Datum and Projection - but not the details for the Projection (Lambert conform conical).
The set consists of 6 sets and if I convert the map to an image the resulting BMP is about 100mb!
I would need to be able to calibrate the map as a whole one and after that convert it into tiles of the right size.
The other problem is converting maps with these outdated Australian standards is impossible if the software has no support for it - gdal is just not my thing ,I can't work it out (maybe I'm too old by now). That why I tried to manually calibrate the Great Desert Map directly but the result is poor-some coordinates are about 10-25pixels out of alignment ,in 1:1250000 that is far too much!

Well ,to be honest it would be easier to use OZI Ce on a PDA ,but now that I know that I can use a program on my Tomtom I prefer this way

But I think we are on a good way here ,and I'm pretty sure that as soon as this map problem is solved and we got most of the interesting areas cover we will end up with the biggest ttmaps community worldwide - where else can you find so many uncharted areas on a Tomtom??
I won't give up until I got a good map coverage on my Tomtom -16GB high speed sd card is already ordered!

    Google2ttMaps

A ttMaps user has written a GUI for Microsoft Windows to convert GoogleMaps to ECW files for ttMaps. You can get it at :

Here is a map of the Otways in Victoria - very popular for 4 whel driving ,especially after some rain.
    - funny looking but I could not add the link without it being replaced by something else (weird)...
The Datum and Projection for this map is not added to ttmaps yet - but I'm confident Jean-Claude will be so nice to add this for us

Sorry, I think there is a mistake : the projection of these files is UTM 54 North (I didn't know Australia was crossing the equator )

I've made a new for the Otways and corrected my error - now the Otways are back in Australia !
Here is the download link :
Only thing missing is the support for this DATUM/PROJECTION in ttmaps.

    You're great!

I found some nice Hema maps and start to convert them ,I'm pretty sure I will find more weird combinations of Datum and Projection.

If someone has good nautical charts of Port Phillip Bay or maybe even for all over Australia I would try to convert them - so that the Tomtom get's some more use.
Same for maps that are used for the small planes

I've converted a map for Australia in 1:250k ,but it is almos 1GB in good quality and still 500mb in just usable quality.
Before I waste my time and bandwidth allowance - is there any interest in a map covering the whole kontinent?
Otherwise I just upload the new State maps...

    The great desert tracks,Victoria High Country,Gippslands,Fraser Island,Simpson Desert,Tropical North Queensland,Darwind Region.
And lots more - all together over3GB ,so be patient ,it's a lot of work

i have this working on a tomtom one and must say its an awesome piece of software, i have the bread crumb feature working and even got it up on google earth of where i have been. I would like a copy of all maps you have converted if possible as its the one thing that would make it a complete piece of software.
