Default XP doesn't autodetect DVD-rom drive.

I have a system running XP Pro that doesn't seem to autodetect the type of disc in the drive until such time as I click on the drive in Explorer.

If I load a DVD into the drive, and watch the drive letter in Explorer, it doesn't come up with the name of the DVD until such time as I click on the drive letter. Then it loads the name of the disc, and starts the autoplay feature.

    Ideas?

    Hi Studio1,

It's possible one of your burning programs has disabled autodetect, to prevent programs trying to run during the burning process.

    cheers

    Thanks Machine..

This PC has a fairly new install of XP, and no writing software.

I have been right through all the autodetect settings and they are all Ok.

The autodetect does in fact work - but only after I click on the drive icon.
    Then it all works perfectly.

Damn, I hate it when this happens.

When you can't work out why something doesn't work, then in a few hours something becomes totally apparent and appears as the very reason!

In this case it was AnyDVD. It was the culprit. It takes over the drive and stops the normal "autodetect" function from happening.
