Depending which ISP you are with you can turn on there spam filter. Optus do it for free where as Tel$tra charge for it.

That should help but won't stop all of it. Have a look at Mailwasher. It allows you to use spam blocking lists and setup your own filters to automatically delete messages before your mail client downloads them.

I use this and have a few filters setup to delete anything with keywords like Viagra, cock etc etc.

Seems like most of my spam comes from China as over Chinese new year my spam stopped.

You will also find Mailwasher on torrent sites

    Talking spam

Well with me until 3 days ago 40 to 70 was normal, But Sat only 10 made into my e-mail in box. Sun and today no spam at all aapt must of finally pulled their socks up. so that's a report from SE QLD the anti spam programs didn't seem to help at all so I just dumped them. If the spam comes back I'll go back to telstra even if it costs money to get rid of the stupid stuff. Thanks for the info about the spam.

I this house yes if you count the dog. However at work one of the things I look after is anti spam and on odd occasions when one slips through it’s normally and offer of a bigger penis sent to a female co worker.

From memory Tel$tra will sting you $2.50 per month for anti spam and you can set that up from your ISP's control panel via the big puddle site.

I think Tel$tra are using Bright mail which is a pretty good - Iron port is better. However most ISP's don't set the filters very aggressively for fear of dropping legitimate email.

Most spammer use botnets to send their crap these days which makes them very hard to track. Last year I spent some time on an idiot Russian spammer who was flooding western (English) mail systems with Russian spam.

I managed to establish his name and address and also harassed his Russian clients. In Russia anti spam laws are in there infancy but they do exist. After a few weeks of trying I managed to contact a government official reasonable for drafting the laws there. He was very helpful but said in Russia there is no such thing as the straightway only roundabout way.

Anyway I was advised to forward the detail to the Cyber crime office of Interpol which I did. I never heard anymore about it. I like to think that spammer is cooling his heels in a Siberian prison camp but I think thats highly optimistic.

On the bright side a couple of years ago a Russian spammer was murdered by anti spammers in that country. I regard that as progress.

waste of bandwith, the buggers. Its always a pain in the arse to turn on email client anf find 100+ emails and only 3 legit (wanted) ones. I notice sometimes with the misses PC and incrediamail it hangs the system for ages receiving then bouncing all those mails.

Unfortunately bouncing is little more than a feel good excises now days. Most spam is sent via Botnets from compromised PC’s

the spammers produce lists and sell them to each other. The way that works is a program brute forces valid email address for a domain. There system might try sending to asmith@domain.com then bsmith@domain.com then csmith@domain.com and so on. The mail system may respond with an accepted code because the user exists on the system which lets the spammer know its a live account which they can send to or sell to other spammers.

Some system negate this by doing tar pitting which means each address looking takes progressively longer so the spammer ends up waiting a few minutes for the result of each request which kills there fun. Most anti spam systems now defeat address harvesting also. That leaves the spammer with the option of using old lists or simple brute force address creation.

There is an early spammer program called dark mailer that bulk mails and fakes everything about the mail envelope and has the ability to sent via botnets. Other programs exist just to harvest email address lists

Botnets are why most ISP’s now block port 25 outbound to prevent infected PC’s sending spam.

If you really want to help stop spam report it to which you can do for free of pay $15.00 for a reporting account which you can integrate into mailwasher.

When you report the spam the ISP of the spammer gets notified and if a number of people complain of the same address the address gets added to a spam blocking list RBL which means they are automatically rejected by anti spam systems or mailwasher if they reference the RBL list the IP address was added too.

LOL, I remember getting a viagra, bigger cock, bigger breasts in 3 seperate emails all from the same sender one day in my work email. I then wondered what that person looked like, or what this guy fantasy was. If my web wasn't monitored at that time I might have googled it.

Assuming that spam is coming from the sender it claims to be coming from is very naive , hence why blocking sender will have zero effect on the amount of spam you get.
For the very same reason assuming that by bouncing spam back to sender is going to actually make it back to the sender is equally naive., This is known as backscatter and causes as many problems as spam itself because you are bouncing spam to forged senders he never sent anything to you to begin with . , In effect you are making your problem someone else's.

There are basically 2 types of "from" addresses you will see in spam , most common is randomly generated from addresses which are always forged into the header of the email to appear this is where they are coming from.
The second kind is where a spammer or spam gang will forge the names of anti spammers and legitimate people into the "from" field. IE: iamaspammer@austech so that people that dont have a clue how to track spam will complain to abuse@austech or their ISP hoping to get their services terminated but most importantly averting the attention away from the spammers themselves.
Another form of the above is known as a "Joe Job" where spammers send all sorts of abusive material like porn etc from a well known legitimate domain like Austech , they dont actually send it from Austech but they will forge the information in the header of the email so it appears Austech is sending it.

A lot of people compare spam to junk mail , but they are very different!!

Unlike junkmail you get in your letter box you actually pay to receive spam , you pay for data / downloads but the problem is you have paid for spam before you get the chance to reject it , Imagine paying for a reverse charge phone call without having the opportunity to refuse it !!! this is exactly what is happening when you get spam., The sender pays nothing only the receiver pays. How would you like to get an excess bill in your mail every month because people decided to over stuff your letter box with junk!! You would be furious and rightfully so!! but why do so many accept spam and not jump up and down about it ?? even worse they pay for it without question.

If someone put a glossy picture of some naked girl with her legs spread open in your letter box and your 6 YO child saw it what would you do ?accept it ?
But for some reason the same picture sent in spam and equally accessible by our children is ok , at worst most will just hit the delete key , Get the same trash in your letter box and most people would be calling the police and making front page news!

Spam is getting worse and worse to the point that at the rate it is growing email communication will become a thing of the past , Unless a lot more people stand up instead of hitting the delete key and paying for this spam the worse it is going to get.
Spam filters , word list's of known spam words like those that have been mentioned will help decrease the amount of spam you get in "your" inbox but it does nothing to help with the problem itself.
Fortunately for spammers most people are only worried about themselves.

Just wondering how many people actually think that joining up to MSN , Gmail , Yahoo , hotmail , facebook and countless others is actually free ?
Has anyone ever themselves how much these services actually make from the information you so freely provide them ? You might be staggered to learn how much "Free" is really costing you.!

Could you tell me how much money hotmail or Gmail is making from me?
I give a bullshit name when I make an account, give them no details that matter or are relevant to anyone, and if you mean I need to spend money by having an isp to access them, then that doesn't really count.

I route multiple email accounts through my gmail account to filter the crap. and also gives me easy access when I'm not at home.

though, late last week there was a influx of new spams that wasnt being filtered ... all that seem to have died down some what atm.

Do you honestly think these multi billion dollar companies got that way by giving you everything for free !! , Sure there is a small percentage that give totally bogus details but 90% of people using these so called free services give legitimate details , these details add up to big dollars in the hands of marketing companies , many of which pay big bucks to have their adds pop in your face every time you open msn etc , check your email online or whatever.
The tricks and methods they use to track your browsing , links you click etc is amazing.

More importantly and for reasons I will never understand people use these rubbish disposable freemail addresses for legitimate purposes , Well people attempt to use these for legitimate purposes anyway never realizing the statement they are making and how many of their emails never make it to their destination.

Thousands of ISP owners , mail server admins all over the world Block all mail from @gmail , @hotmail , @yahoo , @msn to name a few , because 99.9% of mail from these domains is spam and not from anyone who seriously wants their mail delivered to it's destination.
You generally wont know if your mail has been delivered because most of these providers block rejection messages at server level so you cant see how many people actually reject mail from them.

As for the statement you make using these freemail addresses , it is blatantly obvious but most dont say it., a small example from a survey :

Give your impressions and comments after receiving email from the 2 addresses below :

    peter_92@hotmail.com

    1. Peter born 1992
    2. Peter is 16 that is why he is using hotmail
    3. Peter has something to hide using throw away address
    4. Low priority using throw away address
    5. little kid using dads computer while he's at work
    6. maybe spammer using hotmail to phish for live addresses dont reply
    7. uneducated
    8. doesn't want to be taken seriously using disposable address

    peter_92@iinet.net
    1. reply asap
    2. real person
3.wants to be taken seriously using paid for service.
    4.joined iinet back in 1992
