    Default Toshiba Tecra M3

I have a toshiba tecra M3 that use worked for over 3 years, all i used it for was to watch video. Last week it spat the dummy and rebooted, the boot screen is all random characters, i can get to windows safe mode, but thats it....i cant get into the bios screen at all....well i think it does get in but i cant see the table......when i let it goto windows, it gives a blue screen and an error message to contact admin/support..... then a timer coutns down to 0, then it just sits there.....

i had a small issue with the video a while ago, i updated all drivers, and noticed that the bios had soemthign set that wasnt suppose to be....reste that and all was well...just wondering if its somethign to do with the bios....

in the blue screen there should be an error message and at the bottom should be an error code, what are they?

If you suspect it's a bios related error but you can't see the table to correct it, once in Bios press F9 that should load optimized defaults then press F10 to exit saving changes, then ok and restart your computer to see if it made any difference.

is F1 the button to press to access your bios? because toshiba usually use F2 to access Bios.
But with what you are getting on the screen it sounds like a video card issue.

ok, i can get it to boot in safe mode, screen is ok at low resolution, i can also get it to goto normal windows, it then gives me an error:

    ****STOP: 0X0000008E (?????? stuff)
    Beginning dump of physical memory
contact your system admin or tech support group

    ================================================

The screen has all garbage on it during boot....

sounds like your video card driver
i had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago and resolved it by going safe mode and rolling back the driver

Sounds like faulty ram to me. Try it with one stick, (if it has 2) if not pop into your local computer store, and get them to try new ram in it, you'd be suprised how cheap it is.

Yeah my Toshy is about 2 years old it did an automatic update and then started to give me trouble and after about a week of pulling my hair out it ended up being an update to the video driver that was the problem. Got rid of the update got rid of the problem.

A number of Tecra models have had faulty Nvidia video controllers.
It is of epidemic proportions in some models. (Tecra s1,S2,M3 etc)

Just out of warranty I bet.

You are spot on about the Nvidia chip but its in a lot of brands
did a post of how to temp fix it if your game LOL

Before you try this last resort check to see if HP has your model on the extended wrty
    or
You can have a winge in this thread about it
Business support forums - dv2000t 1 long, 2 short beeps, no display

Now don't laugh but this got it working as it aint going to work by it's self
and you can't make it any worse

Turn it on and wrap the beast up in a towel, I put some heat beads into the mix to hurry things along and cook it for 45 minutes

And in 45 minutes she is real hot LOL
Open the laptop lid and sit the laptop on the edge of a table and bend the farker as hard as you can with out snapping in in half LOL
and while your doing it get someone to push the power button to turn it on and bob your uncle

    BUT
when you turn it off next you might get the 3 beeps just bend the beast again LOL

But to my surprise when it cooled down she has worked every time (touch wood)

Its to do with the GeForce Go 7200 not sitting properly and the quotes for boards was crazy they started at $400 and went to $750
When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all

It's actually the chip overheating...so a heatsink should do it.
Toshibas solution was to release a BIOS fix.

The fix just made the cooling fan stay on harder in the cpu area...LOL

I would start with popping in another stick of ram, or at least reseat the one(s) in there before doing too much tinkering.
