What brand modem do you have?
Have you connected to Panels before?
Can Windows xp see your modem?
and is your modem on com port 1 to 4?

Its the standard internal Toshiba modem on an older laptop.
I have connected using the direct connect lead but never with the modem.
The modem is seen by W98se as it works ok with the DOS IR software.
The modem is listed in settings as com2

I have only ever had to use " atz" or "at&f" on my laptops and external modems, these work on netcomm, maestro, d-link, apple USB and banksia.
direct connect does not count, as you do not use the modem.

Try using the 'b0' command in conjunction with the modem AT command. This has been known to fix comms issues with laptop modems.

    i.e.

    ATB0

Also, make sure the modem is V.21BIS compatible.

I have never heard of anyone using an internal modem.
what does Titan use as a baud rate ? i assume somewhere between 300 and 1200 Baud. A 56000 Baud modem might be your problem.
IMHO. I might b wrong but.....

Internal modems are fine as long as they go down to 300 Baud, on the various laptops have owned I never had a problem with the internal modem and a string of "atz or at&f". On GE's web site (under Tech Support) they do have a few modem strings for different modems. Other wise I am using a netcomm AM5066 Rave lll V.92 Data Fax USB Modem, and it works fine on all panels eg DAS, Solution Vision Tecom ect.

The Old challenger systems will only communicate at 300bps. Most laptop modems are not capable of such a slow speed; you'll need to contact the manufacturer of the modem (Not the laptop). If the Challenger is new, there will be an option to change the baud to 1200bps.
What you might find is that you simply need to 'force' the modem to communicate at 300bps by using the appropriate AT command string.
