    Default machines network IP address

Can someone please tell me how in Win XP do i make the machines local IP address permanent.
What i seem to be doing is setting the public IP address and that isn't helping my situation.

Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > On your internet connection, right click and select Properties > click on Internet Protocol to highlight > then click on Properties > then tick 'Use the following IP address' instead of the automaticly selected one and fill out the necessary details

currently having issue getting an internet connection to that machine.
It does have a Local Area Connection.
just rearranging some cables, to ensure all is OK. But seeing though the machine has a local IP & this machine i type on are on the same network it has me baffled.

If you don't specify a default gateway, it will only work on your local network, i.e. home, and probably not have internet access.

The gateway address is usually the address of your router's internal network interface, i.e. the one you connect to with a browser to configure your router.

    Like jimbo said.
In your case the gateway will probably be 10.1.1.1

this does not appear to be correct.
doing this: Control Panel > Network Connections > On your internet connection, right click .... all i get is a general tab with a dialog box [internet connection] settings tab at the bottom [advanced services] 6 ticked boxes with no desciption until i highlight and click edit at the bottom.

If i do this....Control Panel > Network Connections > Local network connection, right click .... i see the Internet protocol box but if i highlight it the properties box is still greyed out.

    thanks
