Default Domain Name / redirecting - confused?

    Hi there,
Hope someone can help and please excuse my ignorance with this subject :-)

I currently have my website @ tpg.com.au and a tpg email address. I also have a .com domain name. At the moment I am paying someone at a hosting service to make it possible for anyone to email me at my .com address and it magically appears at my tpg email address. They have also set it up so that if someone puts my domain name in the address bar it will redirect to my tpg.com.au website.

Can anyone tell me how this is done so I can perhaps do it myself and save some dollars? It will need to be in very plain English and simple instructions if it is a simple thing to do.

    Thanks for your help.
    Pam

in your email application settings you will be able to set up the mail server from your .com acount.
This does not cost you anything, but you will still need to pay for your hosting of the .com address

Thanks for your help Mate. At least I know how to set up new mail accounts. Where I get confused is with the "hosting". I'm guessing the host is not the company my domain name is registered with?? Is that right? Or if it is then I'm paying for that as well as the company who are redirecting or whatever for me.

    domain is seperate to hosting
you can pay me like $30 yr to host your site
then u point ure domain to my hosting, and redirect tpg to it also.
no biggy, redirect is like $10 yr.
btw, redirecting your .com and email to tpg is no drama.

Thank you for clarifying for me. Now, you say "redirecting your .com and email to tpg is no drama" but is it something I can do myself and if so, how?
Sorry, I must sound so dumb!

your email set up in entourage or mail
would utilise an incoming mail server such as, mail.pamsdomain.com
the outgoing mail server would be most likely mail.m.tpg.com.au

    Hi guys.
Thanks for your help. I have some more investigating to do. Will log into my domain management account and have a look around. I think you've both helped enough for me to get myself into some sort of trouble ................ will be back here when I do :-)
    kind regards and thanks again.

Oh gawd! So I've just realised I need webhosting software. I have no idea what to get but I've downloaded a little free program called "dsl webhosting 2.8" Is that the sort of thing I'm supposed to be looking at or can you recommend something simple?
I'm not exactly shy - just a grandmother who is continually learning and getting out of her depth :-)
