OK - I recently read a thread about a 3d card that was being silly - but I have the same issue, only difference is I have replaced my nvidia with a raedon x1950 pro and I am having the same issue. 3d GPU falls over and reboots then all is fine for a while - then it does it again
Its driving me batty - I'm not sure if it is hardware or should I reinstall windows
any ideas would be appreciated

hey phil & machine
the card has a fan on it so it shouldn't be heat - just downloaded the latest driver and installed it, lets see how it goes eh
I don't turn the pc off - so I hope it isn't heat

one of mine used to do this.
the motherboard had leaky caps on it hidden way up the back near the psu.
I managed to get it to do it again - might be a heat issue after all
playing COD4 and she died
the motherboard is a gigabyte with the solid caps so I might make sure all fans are going and clean the dust out - then try it and if all else fails do the new xp thing - then I spose go for a new MB

I would be trying to get my hands on a borrowed video card before buying a new mainboard.
This is definately a video issue, most likely caused by the video card. And as we have determined, it is probably heat related. Clean the fans out, if that fails, try another video card, if it works, buy a new card. if not, try new memory failing that, try a new mobo.

I have replaced a nvidia with a raedon and still having the same issues plus I thing the original nvidia is stuffed. That worked fine until a few weeks ago and thats when I replaced it
so we're down to the heat issue, ram or motherboard. The ram is new too.......but that has been in longer than the new 3D card - but the nvidia was playing up. So I can possibly rule that out too.
I'm hoping it's a heat issue - but I'm only hoping cause that's a cheap fix - the others aren't

i was just reading atomic, and came accross an excellent method of checking for heat issues.
while not 100% fool proof, its worth a shot.
Take the side off the case and point a desk fan in there. if it is a heat problem, then it should go away with a desk fan blasting in there. otherwise, it will crash again.
Are you able to get the mainboard on warranty, because by the sound of it, it is a pretty new system.

Hi there, I notice you said your video card is an ATI and motherboard is a gigabyte. It wouldn't happen to be a Packard Bell or NEC computer would it? Is it an AGP video slot?
First check the fan is working well and clear of dust but otherwise...
This problem is often caused by dust/moisture/corrosion on the video card connector and/or motherboard AGP slot. It can sometimes be fixed with a can of contact cleaner and some careful cleaning. Sometimes there is no fix, the slots PacBell/NEC used on their Gigabyte MBs just don't seem to work as well as Gigabyte boards usually do (Gigabyte have a good reputation IMO). Maybe they didn't use a high enough grade gold plating as they should have, but I'm just throwing ideas out, I don't know much about that side of things.
EDIT: so to sum up, yes your motherboard might be dying/dieing(?)
nah - it's a generic, I sorta upgrade it as I go along - and the oldest component is the cpu and motherboard
I might pull it apart - dedust it, try some contact cleaner, bung in another hard drive, install xp and update all drivers and have a go of cod4 and see what happens
thanks everyone

I keep a desk fan on my workbench just for this reason it's a nice chrome one too
