Default DVX 555U HDD Audio Noise

    Hi Guys,

I have recently put together a DVX 555U with a 80Gb HDD which works perfectly but intermittantly there is a HDD head seeking noise which is feeding back into the audio and playing through the TV which is incredibly annoying.

It sounds like two short thumps "dod dod"

I have tried several drives and they all do the same thing

Any one else seeing this problem ?

Is anyone aware of a fix for this?

If you can use the digital audio out it solves the problem. Also keeping the volume on full on the stb and use the tv to change the volume helps a bit if you cant use the digital out.

Another thing is timeshift on? turning it off could help too.

Other than that i dont know of a solution

apparently the brand of HDD used can also solve this issue. I use a Western Digital 80G HDD in my 555 and have absolutley no problems.

Some brands certainly seem better than others in regard to noise and electrical interference

I have the same issue with a Seagate 80Gb disk. I have found that the louder the volume the less i hear it. I will eventually get another disk (any suggestions), I can live with it for now.

Yeah I am using a Western Digital WD800JB

The drive has an annoyingly high pitched noise from the spinning and the feedback from the seek is particularly bad.

I will try the full volume trick and if i eventually get a digital decoding amp ill try that too :P

Talking DVX 555U HOW TO GET RIDE OF THE HDD Audio Noise

After much experimentation I have found that if you use a 2.5 inch laptop HDD then you get ride of the noise problem COMPLETELY. Min spec 5400 RPM 8 meg cache.
Of course you also need a 3.5 to 2.5 inch adapter - you can get one from most good computer shops.
An added benefit is that the unit does not get nearly as hot as normal.

    I hope this helps

I'd contemplated buying one of those and doing that, but my only spare 2.5" drive is only 5GB, so it's hardly worth it.

Nowadays my DVX-555U is in the office and gets little use. I also have two twin-tuner HD PVR's and a 1.7 tuner SD PVR, so there'd need to be a lot on at the same time that's worth recording before the DVX was needed for its recording ability. As such, I went back to a 20GB WD drive, after having an 80GB Seagate in it for a while. (Depending on which TV and antenna it was connected to, the Seagate sometimes lead to the previously-mentioned problems.)

    Hi all

I was given a product sample of the Dvx-555u to test and comment honestly on its benefits and flaws

I'm using an 80GB seagate hard disk and haven't experienced any noise problem so far (touch wood)

    The review is at

If you have any suggested additions or modifications to the review please post them in the article’s comments section and I will pass them on to the manufacturer

    thanks
