maybe it repaired a corrupted boot sector on your hdd. Not sure if you would have got to the welcome screen though.
This morning my system refused to boot, freezing on the Windows welcome screen. I tried safe mode and last know good config etc all the other tricks that I know but no joy. In desparation I decided to run a repair install of XP. After booting and selecting "repair existing Windows installation" it displayed "checking your hard drive" then displayed "Windows has performed maintenance on your hard drive you must restart to continue the installation" When I restarted Windows booted normally without any more installation.
Can anyone suggest what the "maintenance" might have been and should I consider that the HDD is on the way out.

It probably repaired either the MBR, GUID, FAT, MFT or any of the startup files.
