I think it's obvious that you short circuit the motherboard because it was working fine before you used the parallel loopback and it was connected wrongly.

looks like it's toast then mate
Fair Enough. I'll chuck this thing up in the BST and see what I get for it because as I said; everything else besides the mainboard/powerboard are fine. HD, RAM, DVD drive, screen and case are all good.
Thanks guys.
After leaving it on for about an hour I heard the cooling fan come on for a bit to cool it down and then power back down. This means something is responding on the motherboard right?
just a quick thought, can you see a faint image on the screen? if you shine a torch on it or angle the screen in the light can you see anything? if not connect an external monitor to the laptop and fire it up see if anything comes up?

Tried both of these things and no response. Thanks anyway
Wow...well in that case I may have to Ebay this thing...
Come to think of it though; the mainboard is the most expensive part in it so I probably wont get as much for it but should make the money back I spent on it...
Thanks for the help guys!
Hey mate, this laptop is the 17" right?
Why don't you just get it fixed champ? better than selling it for peannuts, get a new motherboard it's only $316 brand new.
Not sure it's worth it, They only seem to be selling online for around $350 anyway. There are some good quality condition second hand boards on ebay for around $100; would this be alright?
Also, is there any slight chance that this problem could be with the powerboard? I don't want to buy a new motherboard and find out that's not the problem...
Cheers.
Just letting people know that finally ended up buying a new motherboard for this thing, installed it and now it works perfect. So it's had about 5 months of usage and it works great. Hopefully it doesn't fail again after a year of running like last time...
However I have since received a laptop as a gift and no longer need it.
If anyone is interested:
Thanks to everyone that helped me!
