    Default No CD/DVD error 39!

I have both a CD rom writer and a DVD/CD rom writer in a Dell Dimension E520. Both drives as well as the hard drive are Sata.

After removing numerous viruses, 14 instances and alot of spyware, 702 instances, and not being able to access either Device or a USB virtual Cd-Rom, I checked the device hadrware list and got yellow asterisks for them.

And when I try to remove(delete)/reinstall them I get an ERROR 39 message.

Error 39 relates to lower and upper filters in the registry!

    hxxp://www.pchell.com/hardware/cd_drive_error_code_39.shtml

After the above procedure and removing the devices that usually allows the return of CD/DVD rom devices.

Except in my case removing the registry entries deleting the cd rom and DVD rom and allowing the computer to restart and find them again gives the same error code 39!

    If I open regedit and go to the 965 . . .

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE~SYSTEM~CurrentControlSet~Contro l~Class
    {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    ........^^^........

. . . . location the filters have not reappeared but yet I still see the yellow asterisk for both CD rom and dvd drives.

Here's another twist, it wont even allow my San Disk mem stick to create a virtual Cd drive as most San Disk mem sticks wll attempt to do upon insertion to a usb port!

Is there another registry entry somewhere that I've missed?

    Thanks Chris

In a situation like that, I'd reinstall Windows. Then I'd take some steps to prevent so much mayhem from happening again.

Often you can spend hours chasing your tail with registry entries and "fix it" programs to no avail - and you could have reinstalled
Windows and been back up and operational within half an hour.

How the heck did you get all those viruses and spyware?

Studio1 is right. A clean install is guaranteed. Its just inconvenient for regular home users.

I spent 4 days doing everything possible to repair this issue on my Dell D630 after also getting a virus , Trust me there will be a lot more other issues that will keep popping up if your drives are not being recognized.
I ran every malware / spyware and antivirus program and the system was totally clean but unfortunately the virus that caused the drives to stop working makes changes all through the registry and windows system files that don't show up as being infected.

A clean install although not what you wanted to do is the only way to get your dell back to normal.
