Default Trying to program TP wireless AP

    Hi again all,

I am trying to introduce an AP into my network but am unable to access its menu.

Currently I have a Linksys WRT54GL router connected to my main PC via ethernet cable. The router is also connected wirelessly to my Linksys range expander half way down the house (which feeds all my other PC's in the house). I was wanting to install the TP link AP down the other end of the house.

    Router--> Expander-----> Access point

Here is the problem the user guide says to connect the AP to the router so I can configure it, but when I do and I type in the default IP for the AP which is 192.168.1.1 I enter my router's secure menu.

So how do I access the AP's menu???

Have you tried plugging a network cable in to the AP and the other end in to a laptop and then trying to bring up 192.168.1.1 ?

I cant exactly remember how I changed the settings on mine as it was so long ago but I think that was it.

    Hi Sanity,

Yes I have and the same result. When I connected to the lappy I could connect to the AP wirelessly but not access the menu because the AP was not connecting to the net

    P.S
Networking is not one of my better skills

It comes about because the TP Wireless AP has the same default IP as the Lynksys router, I tore my hair out for a couple of weeks trying to figure this exact scenario out.

You need to change the default IP of the TP.

    Here explains how.

You need to disconnect your Lynksys before doing this, and connect the TP to the computer with WIRE, wirelessly won't work.

Oh and write down your settings. i.e. the IP you changed it to, otherwise more headache in the future when you want to change something.

The access point shouldnt need to connect to the internet should it ? Mine has a default address written on the bottom of it which is say 192.168.1.22
So all I have to do is run a cable between a computer and it and type that address in to the browser to access its menu.

I am not sure if I am understanding exactly where the problem is , but if the AP and your modem/router have the same IP address couldnt you switch off your modem/router and then connect your AP and a laptop via a cable and type in 192.168.1.1 to access the menu ? That way , it wont try and connect to your router instead of the AP. My AP menu allows a menu to change the IP , so you could change it to something else to avoid conflict.

I'm glad I'm not the only poor bastard who has had this issue.

OK Globe so If I disconnect the linksys router then I have my modem connected to my PC via usb? or ethernet cable and where do I plug the ap in?

Cable ---> surfboard modem ----> PC via usb cable or ethernet and where do I plug the ap??

    This is how mine is:

ADSL ---> Lynskys ADSL Modem ----> TP Wireless Router/AP ----> PC

    2 laptops connected wirelessly.

The PC is connected to the TP Wireless Router/AP with ethernet cable. The Tp Router is connected to the ADSL modem with ethernet cable.

    I hope this helps.

    Sorry Globe, that doesn't help.

If I take the router out of the equation the modem has to connect to the PC directly. Then where does the AP go???

@ Sanity just tried it your way connected the AP to the laptop via ethernet but the browser will not work ..

    Thanks Decapper.

OKay I have now connected the modem to the PC via USB cable and have got connectivity. I then plugged the ethernet cable from my PC into the AP and have typed in the default IP ( written on bottom of the AP) 192.168.1.1 into the browser and am unable to access it??????

TP wireless AP's are in essence wireless routers, AFAIK you can't have 2 routers on the same network, because each router is assigning IP addresses DHCP style on the same network.

Whats the issue with using your range expander to connect? You should be able to connect a lot of computers to your wireless network anyway?

Sorry about before, I was unsure what you were trying to achieve.

    Hi Globe,

The range expander is halfway down the house and I need this AP much further down.

So I am back to square one, I still can't get into the menu

To get into the menu, you don't need anything else connected, just the TP.

Connect a computer with ethernet directly to the TP Link, with nothing else connected, then try setting the IP to a different one, but not the same IP as a computer may already be using on your network.

It would have DHCP enabled by default surely, he needs to get into the menu and see what options are available.

    Simply,

Leave all your original network settings alone, dont mess with the rest of your network.

Connect the TP Link upto a laptop/PC via ethernet.
Go to the windows options and set the IP for the PC to 192.162.1.X (X being any number other than 1).
Save settings - give it about 30-40 seconds to negotiate.

Open up internet explorer and go to 192.168.1.1 the TPLink 501 settings page should come up. Login - admin password - admin.

Now you have gotten into the settings

select "client mode", survey for the network you want to connect to, enter password, hit save and restart.

now change your PC network settings back to "automatically assign".

Now you can pretty much connect the TP link 501 to any Ethernet based device and use it wirelessly.

Thats just a rough guide off the top of my head, if your still stuck with it ill write up a step by step guide for you.

Its really simple to use and is very flexible, you just need to get your head around it first.

I dont think you need to change the IP of the unit if its acting in client mode (not 100% sure on this, but i dont think it would hurt changing it).
