Gold and Silver use PIC architecture, Fun uses AVR. There's comparison and .
The benefit of extra RAM and EEPROM onboard the silver's , compared to the gold's , can't be overstated. Gold really only has enough for very simple systems and the lack of RAM in particular is very limiting. Once you run out of RAM you have to use EEPROM which is phenomenally slower, even more so once you need to use the external EEPROM, and reduces card life too.
By all means have a play with Gold but you'll soon outgrow it.
If you prefer to code in C rather than assembler then AVR is often a better choice because it has extra pointers and addressing modes specifically for . The free GNU compiler for AVR produces tight code and is cross-platform of course too.
