    Default ip camera recommendations.....

I am after an ip camera to cover my yard.....

doesn't have to be top of the range, preferably with a sony etc. ccd, 25m ir range, upload to ftp/email etc.

something that will last, not too cheap....

Does it have to be an ip camera? If you want remote access you can do that with the software.

Have you looked at Y-CAM. They look pretty good. I haven't used one but will be getting one soon.

    Try IndigoVision.

The latest 35X PTZ if you can afford that level has progressive scan and excellent back light compensation. Around $2500+GST

Failing that a 9000 fixed camera with day night is $1800.

The big difference is they use 50% less bandwidth than the others.
For your reference the Sony is actually an Axis

You dont have to go for an IP camera - you could use a standard camera and choose to add a web server device.

It really depends on what it is being used for, but one thing to consider and keep in mind - and I am sure this will cause a flame war- is that Ip cameras generally (did anyone see the generally word - before responding) are not as good at handling low light or troubling lighting conditions, this may not seem like a big deal, but it can at times be the difference between having enough picture or reference colour to ID someone ..there is not a lot of difference between a Maroon and a Red shirt.

A lot of IP cameras are CMOS which as a GENERAL rule are not as good in low light performance - there are exceptions to this though.

If it were me I would go for either a Panasonic III or IMHO opinion get the best of both worlds Bosch make an IP camera that has both Analogue and IP you can then have the better performance of Analogue and the Features of IP.

It just depends on how you want to record and what your budget is

It all depends on what you call cheap. I bought an IP camera off ebay ( groan from professionals ) and I am happy with it. The IR is good enough to cover my front yard , it records on motion detection , wireless or wired , can upload to ftp/email etc and various other features. I paid about $300AUD. Previously I would spend that replacing garden lights every couple of months.

Its amazing what cheap chinese technology can pump out

I agree - however keep in mind...how long have you owned the device....so often people compare performance against cost without considering MTBF considerations.

if it lasts for 12 months only and you need to buy another then it was $600 for 24 Months and will the performance from the device...especially cheap IR's still be as good in 12 Months.......i doubt it very much as cheaper IR Illumination devices are not made to last.

Dont get me wrong, the same device in 12 months might be better and cheaper and certainly with more features.....so if a good brand costs $600 and yours costs $300 and you need to buy 2:1 then your ahead becasue you may get later features......its just that the replacement point will be when the footage is worst...and do you want that risk?
For you this is simple, because you alone will support it...for a comapny selling and installing we can not afford to use cheap gear...think of it this way.....365 days in a year how many installs is 365 cameras - in my case maybe 15 or so.....so after 15 Installs if each camera fails after 12 months of use at different days, then I am replacing a camera every day for a year - we dont mean to think we know better, its just when you are talking about running a business in CCTV you need to have it reliable so we prefer brand names

You have plenty to choose from I would recommend any of the following Panasonic, GE, Dvtel or Axis if you are after quality. Cisco have some good stuff also but a bit more $$$.

you can buy the IP box as a seperate item can't you? I'm sure I've seen them at Jaycar - they accept 4 video inputs and have a network socket on them as well as some software.....i'll check next time I go in there.....
