Yes...don't laugh and flame me...haha
Has anyone noticed the shortage of cat litter in the supermarkets?
The cheapo big bag brands ex Woolies and Coles etc no longer seem to exist, and the very smalll bags are going for over $6-7 each.
Does anyone know the reason for the shortage, as when we ask in the supermarkets, they don't seem to know why they are not receiving the other type.

Ha...
I just joined that forum and posted the same topic....lol
Yes there is a shortage of dolomite. aka Kitty Litter.
The reason for this should be really obvious.
If you know where it is mined, and what the weather has been like in those places, you might be forgiven for thinking that the water absorbing qualities of this mineral might make it difficult to mine and process.
I have noticed a shortage , and our cats seem to be shittin a lot more lol
I just went 2 weeks ago and got a few fertiliser bags full of dolomite form the local sand a gravel joint , total cost was $7
enough kitty litter aka dolomite to last months now
The litter we use is CopRice based not dolamite. It is a lot better for the cats as well. The brand is Max's.

All Religions Are Cults Just Some Are More Readily Accepted Than Others.
We use what most breeders here in the area use and it is made from recycled paper, a bit more expensive but lasts much longer than the dolomite version.
The shelves in the SMs are literally empty.
ATM I am actually drying it out in the sun(when it occasionally shines).
Out kitties are actually trained to go out and find a jolly spot to relieve themselves but in this constant rain and mud there is not a hope.
This might be the problem with other cat owners who do the same, so the demand for litter exceeds supply.
Most of the kitty litter in NSW comes from Bingara in NSW, Mt Sylvia near Toowoomba, and Maidenwell near Kingaroy. All have had a lot of heavy rain.
Forgive my stupidity, I meant to say Diatomite, not Dolomite.
Dolomite is Calcium, Magnesium Carbonate used in the steel industry.
Diatomite is silica based err... clay. It's the clay used to stabalise nitroglycerine to make Dynomite. Oops... bit too much information would would be terrorists.
Anyhow, it's the basis for Kitty litter and lots of other interesting purposes.
It's absorbing properties don't make it viable to mine while it's wet.
Trash, would you know if this can be used successfully in the tumblers for shining metal. I just bought one and read somewhere kitty litter works and ends up being heaps cheaper than walnut or other media
Nar, I'm not sure acejas.
I do know they use it as an abrasive, and it's formed from fossilised diatoms.
I've got a couple of mineral books, but I don't focus much on lapidary as such.
I'll have a look through them. I would have figured a really fine abrasive like sodium bicarbonate would work well.
I guess trial and error is the best way to find out.
