Can anyone offer a bit of advice on if I can, and if so what hardware is required to set up an effective VOIP service to 3g HDSPA internet service.
nb: for a home based pc connection not mobile

I resell the Exetel 3G service which is wholesaled from Optus on the 900mhz or 2100mhz range and have set up a number of voip clients over 3G.
It really is dependant on your location, cell tower load, latency etc etc. For some it works really well, but for others it doesn't.
Have you already got your 3G service? If so what kind of speeds down and up are you getting and are the speeds fairly consistant?
Warbo,
Just out of interest (you've probably crunched the numbers already).
Is VOIP viable on 3G internet? I also assumed that currently the cost of the actual MB would far outway any real savings gained on VOIP.
thanks in advance
Urban, it depends what codec you use and of course what download you get per month. With out promoting, for $37.50/month you can get 5gb/month and that would easily cover voip calls using any codec no matter how much you use the phone. Don't forget you could drop your phone line all together saving probably $29.00/month. If you don't want to drop your phone line completely you can aleast change to homeline budget saving $10/month.
Again, 3G isn't for everyone but I think in the next 12 months it's going to be a very attractive/cost effective broadband service for a lot of the population.

I think, from memory that Bigpond/Telstra NextG network does a NAT on there systems. I have seen the NAT IP change many times in a single session. This makes it very hard for someone to open a connection to your "computer".
As long as you create an outbound connection and no inbound connection is needed it would be ok.
As far as I know, its only Bigpond/NextG that do that.
I use Three 3G E160G into a Billion 7404VGPX and i am using Engin but it is not happy, it would be if i was using post paid instead of prepaid internet. But with different providers its meant to work very well, but like others have said do your homework 1st
here are some very useful links
and have a read at whirlpool
When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all
Thanks Everyone for the replies, sorry for the delay in getting back
Thanks Warbo - I don't have an internet connection at the moment. I am semi-rural and do have 3g coverage, I have checked an optus wireless connection and could connect, did not run a speed test though, I will do this tonight.
I am not a high-end internet user and landline calls are also relatively low with the exception of the missuses semi-regular calls to relos in QLD and there are 3 mobile phones in the house and I can't see the value in paying a line rental, so yes more than happy to drop the phone line completely.
Thanks for the links best4less I will see what can do with those and get back. Yep I have trolled Whirlpool a lot of the 3g voip info seems to be for Mobiles? It's a bit of a case of with only limited internet access I an only do limited research, If I had broadband at home......
PM sent Blackjack.
Speed tests on Optus 3 connection are a bit pedestrian around 1.25 mbps down and 0.35 up.... Might have to look at other options given those figures
