Default Cops to shut down unsecured wireless networks?

Saw this article, hope it doesn't happen. Its so useful grabbing a wifi jump when you forget something and need to google it.

Then again if people cant be stuffed learning how to implement secure networks should they be allowed to have one.

child pornography, if one was to desire the muck, it would be the only safe way to download it. It would be free & anonymous. Apart from the poor sod whose network it is downloaded from (when they get the knock on the door in the middle of the night) it would be the 1st choice of lowlife downloaders of this stuff.

I think thats the case they make mate, but I think from what has been shown recently the child porn downloaders dont worry about their connections that much, they would probably go via a TOR router than actually look for a wireless connection.

I know of three places that are business that did not have their connections secured, one was rather useful as a spend most of my summer there (watching people stand around, and occasionally chase a red/white ball).

I see your point, but wonder what would prompt you to raise such an issue?

perhaps ummm the manufactures of such devices should be more accountable.

it has been raised before, what do you do if you come across one? report it to owner? i dont think cops should be involved at all nor do i see them as wanting to be involved or resources to evolve them...

    down right stupid

encryption is not legally required. Many people around me have unsecured networks and ALLOW people to connect and use free internet.

The great WiFi robbery: police to patrol down your streetAsher Moses
    July 21, 2009 - 3:57PM .

The Queensland Police fraud squad says it will be the first police force in the world to go on "wardriving" missions to warn homes and businesses if their wireless networks are not secure.

Detective Superintendent Brian Hay said criminals were piggy-backing on the WiFi connections of ordinary computer users and using them to anonymously commit crimes such as fraud and identity theft

    ----
    ----
Detective Inspector Bruce van der Graaf, head of the NSW Police Computer Crimes Unit, said he was watching the Queensland Police operation with interest.

"Apart from notifying people that their wireless is unsecure I don't know what else would be achieved by it but if their trial is fruitful we'd always participate in something that works," he said.

The Queensland operation could attract criticism from those who believe police time would be better spent seeking out drug dealers and robbers, but Detective Superintendent Hay said the issue was just as important as any other.

Criminals could steal information from computers on vulnerable networks and also use other people's internet connections to launch malware and other cyber crime attacks.

"If we save mum, grandma and grandpa from losing their life savings, having their identity stolen or losing their kids' inheritance ... you ask them if they think it's a good use of police time and resources," he said.

Big deal. Any comp crook worth his salt could lever open a WEP-encrypted connection in 20 mins. Even WPA isn't secure when the blackhats are doing stuff like this:

What a waste of resources, maybe there are too many cops employed, that have nothing of importance to do. No wonders QLD is broke.

It could be a pretext to snoop into people's homes, in order to find other crime (meth lab?, pot heads, etc.), in order to notify them of status of a private network.

If they want to stop mum, grandma and grandpa losing money they should investigate the superannuation industry.

Our local Sherrifs office (Downtown - main street) has a secure network but the access code is 1111111111
I'm pretty confident every crim in town knows it.

I think there are a few things to consider and remember.

If I am the owner of an internet connection them I am responsable for what happens on it. If someone hooks into my WIFI and does bad things, then I will be in trouble for it; that is until I can prove it was not me.

So the inform people of this is a good thing. Most people are not aware of the danger nor care to listen to most people as it is all to "techie".

So one thing if you read as written, is the police are trying to do a commuity service... there job is to keep people safe.

I kinda get the impression it is more about them LOOKING at whats on your computer via your wireless etc. If you catch them, "we where just testing your security!"......

Remember some countrys, the police have the right to hack into your home networks.... This just seems like the first step.

I think a better way would be to inform the users of the risks and let them know how to fix. Ad's could be a way to do this.

I setup a honey pot with full open access to my AP. It did not go anywhere, just logged connections. You could pick it up from the main road no probs. I left it running for 3-4 weeks... no hits.

The other thing people need to do is ensure things like SNMP or correctly setup. Most for get this. If you box has SNMP, the default is likly to be on with public/private. If someone can snmp connect with private (read/write) they can reset you password and take over the AP.

I've done a little bit of home work in my small country town to see if there is enough interest to hold some info sessions.... most people dont care.

I think the motton the logo/badge was "to serve and protect".
So to provide a service to protect your wifi is in line.

I think its good to have peoples awareness improved. As long as they dont start poking around in there.

ie: A connection and a ping - yep open...
no need to see if they can mount a drive to your home computer.
