Welcome to the law of the jungle.
Fight it with all your might most of the good techs I know including myself are no longer doing work on the CAN it is a sh!tfight.
Hi guys,
I am a telecom technician in NZ. Visionstream have taken over our area and are telling us that we will have to buy our own vehicle & tools to work for them. This does not sound like a good idea to the Techs over here. Are there any owner operator techs out there who would like to give us some advice?
Thanks.

Hi Donald, Welcome to Austech and good luck on your troubles that you are currently enduring.
I worked for visionstream when they where owned by telstra, fantastic job, then it was sold to leighton contractors and the downward spiral started. I took a redundancy for there soon after, that was back in 1997, never improved from what I heard.
Vision Stream
ABB
Telstra
etc etc etc
Get ready for many more..... It's contractors all the way down the line these days.
I liked Pies for 80cents and a pot of beer for $1.50, alas it's all in the past.
Just like Telecoms with huge employee bases.
As for your question of Owner Operator Techs, i know plenty, they all got smart, tooled up, got the right vehicles and they now get work thrown at them... They always gribble and groan about the above mentioned companys, but they also make some bloody good money... $1200 for half a days work sounds good to me. It's not always like that, but all the ones i know now own $$$ houses, have multiple vehicles and plenty of cash to spend on whatever they want.
The ones that didn't embrace the oppertunity... i have no idea. Just remember, once you are a contractor, it doesn't mean you have to work for just Vision Stream.
Granted, if you are 45 plus and comfy in ya cosy little job, this new world option will probably not sit well with you. I can see that point entirely.
