Nines new FTA ch 99

Nine's new digital channel GO! will premiere 7am, August 9, on Channels 99 metro, 80 (WIN) and 88 (NBN).

The Kids WB will feature prominently on the first day, with four episodes back-to-back of Knowfirst favourite The Big Bang Theory commencing at 7.30pm.

Sundays will feature comedy, Mondays will focus on reality, Tuesdays will be home to reality, Wednesday will feature sci-fi, Thursday will be a girls-night in and Friday and Saturday will be CSI marathons.

Other programs to feature on GO! will be Entertainment Tonight, TMZ, Seinfeld plus cartoon classics like The Flinstones.

There's been a history of networks announcing "national" channels that, in the fine print, have excluded some states. Ten Network's on-again off-again position regarding One HD availability in Tasmania is just one example. So it's pleasing to see that Nine's GO will have pretty broad coverage, according to the writeup on .

For many people who cancelled Pay TV for economic reasons, GO! will be welcome with many american shows to ease Pay TV withdrawal symptoms: The Bachelor, Big Bang Theory, Chuck, CSI, CSI Miami, CSI NY, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dance Your Ass Off, Dog the Bounty Hunter, Entertainment Tonight, Home Improvement, Just Shoot Me, Fringe, Little Britain, Seinfeld, Sex in the City, Survivor Gabon, Sarah Connor Chronicles, Weeds, Wipeout, The Wire, Kitchen Nightmares, Hells Kitchen, Entourage, Chuck, Aliens in America, Damage, Eleventh Hour, Gossip Girl, Kill Point, TMZ etc.

Potentially it could, but I haven't seen any announcement of that and it certainly doesn't happen automatically! I'm not optimistic; Aurora recipients still haven't got ABC2.

I looked at the Wiki site you noted, and from that it would seem that satellite retransmission doesn't get a look in.

Christ!, I dont get it, I'm old enough to remember when Telstar was launched and the Bloody great wave guide that the Poms had at Goonhilly Downs to recieve the signal, and the French reciever was in operation before the Poms, Oh the embarrassment.

Now we've got myriad geostationary satellites in orbit and we only need a 65cm dish to get a perfect picture, and we still get the leftovers of the terrestrial stations.

The reason Aurora only gets leftovers is because it's not a real priority for either the commercial networks or government.

There aren't enough people in remote areas to be of great interest to advertisers. And for years the budgets of both ABC and SBS were every year. Even the recent funding increase by Rudd to do all that the government is asking them to deliver.

Yes it's sad, but IMO with the current condition of hospitals, schools, childcare, aged care, not to mention the environment, I think the government has bigger fish to fry. I know everyone's got stars in their eyes about high definition but compared to the state of public broadcasting in other countries like China and NZ I think Australian FTA is in pretty good shape. Despite all the budget cuts and the creeping commercialism I think ABC and SBS are still both exceptionally good services.

If TV wasn't so bad here I probably wouldn't be trying to fathom the mysteries of the Clarke belt satellites and the frustrations of trying to align a Motek, to say nothing of wandering the streets of Frankston looking for "shifty bald men".

WIN80 is the current HD channel. the SD WIN channel is ch 8.
So exactly what are we getting then??
And as for that line up, I can barely contain my excitement.

GO! will be on Channel 80 WINHD when GO! launches on Augest 9th then in October it will move to Channel 88 were it will be broadcasted in SD

So what are we saying here - if you live in a remote area presently covered by Aurora, be eternally grateful for what you've got. What you've got is a low resolution (4:3 aspect ratio) service masqerading as a digital broadcast because it uses a digital platform with 2 commercial and ABC1 & SBS. I think you analysis is bascially correct however - the digital TV revolution will be a non event for remote folks - I dont expect any change after the launch of D3 either.

the only reason I retain my Aurora card is for the Friday night AFL at a reasonable time (ie 8:30 pm here in Cairns). My daughter lives in Nhulunbuy NT - a mining town of 3000 or thereabouts. After a great deal of fanfare about the imminent arrival of digital terrestrial a year or so ago - the local community have been now advised that its not going to happen, and that locals will need to purchase a sat dish to get 'their digital fix' from Aurora via that method. Unfortunately, they fail to mention that from a quality point of view they are better off with the current local analogue transmission!

Eventually, viewers will start voting with their feet - migrating back to Austar because at least they can get some widescreen and evenually high def (I'm no fan of current pay TV arrangements by the way). I don't subscribe to them because here in Cairns the current FTA provide a good array of high quality digital services.

Look the Aurora services performed a very worthwhile function in the early days but its time to update the technology and expand the services - people in remote areas deserve better.

pc9, As far as I am concerned, this whole schamozzle of Digital TV is on Par with the Mighty Telstra's claim of covering '98% of the Population'.
Unfortunately that 98% live in about 20% ? of the land mass (please correct) so that those 2% who live in the other 80% sort of not get thought of.
Its when those very silly 2 % say 'What about us?' that the wheel falls off the Tub Thumping Loud Acclimations of 'HOW GOOD ARE WE' calls from the current Political party in Power Wheel Barrow.
I dont care who is in power, they all whistle the same out of tune rhetoric No Money, No idea, No Interest because we dont have the political clout of metropolitan areas.
Also the Broadcast Licence holders certainly dont want any form of competetion that might reduce their veiwing audience base.
I dont blame them as it costs big bikkies but what does annoy me is what seems to be an unwillingness to consider alternatives.
I have always said I would be willing to pay a fee as I do now for Austar and would now still if I could access FTA services relayed by satellite.
They cant use the old bogey of losing advertising revenue as most FTA ads are for either multinational or chain outlets anyway.
I wont be driving 400kms to save 5 cents on a punnet of butter at 'Fred's All Night' eatery-supermarket-Fish and chip shop conveniently located midway along the GunBarrel Highway !!!
Like the ads I saw on Aurora for Coles in Alice Springs or someone in Mt Isa.
Just a mere 1500 + kms each way.
Currently all we can do is wait and see how well the changeover goes in Mildura starting January 2010 and hope it will highlight the need for a satellite Digital FTA service.
It also wouldnt hurt to start ramping up a bit of pressure on the current sitting members to remind them that the next Federal Elections are not that far way.

Agree - the case for additional services on Aurora is a lost cause - why would you want to put a silk purse on a sow's ear anyway. The whole platform is just a heavily subsidised cheappie so if you are expecting that the government is going to further subsidise in a range of enhancements and high def stuff for such a small viewing audience you believe in the tooth fairy. However a little bit of an upgrade would go a long way. For starters ramp up the resolution a bit and convert the commercial RABS, ie Imparja, SCTV, WIN AND GWN, to widescreen standard def. Second, overlap the current HD ABC and SBS services (perhaps ABC 2 and SBS 2 SD) on D1 to C1 or D3.
