Default Too much ram to run Windows 98?

Is it possible that my PC has TOO MUCH ram to run Windows 98? I am trying to set up windows 98 in a dual boot configuration on a seperate partition, but it is saying that my computer does not have enough "memory" to install windows 98, "memory" is a very broad term, so it has me a tad confused. The partition I am trying to install windows 98 to is a blank, formatted 16GB FAT32 Partition, and I have a whopping 4 Gigabytes of ram, So I fail to understand how I dont have enough "memory" to install Win 98. Hell, it runs on an old 486 !! So what is going on here? any workarounds?

The first thing that comes to mind is..... WHY would you want to run Win98?, Being the worst OS MS released (closely followed by Vista )

Possibly driver issues, peripherals not being recognised, or even processor being too fast for it.

Firstly, I like Windows 98, it's certainly alot better than Vista (the rubbish operating system) Secondly, I want to be able to play some old Games again hehe.

Win 98 wouldn't recognize 4 gig of ram, take out all but 512Meg.

You Can do it by editing the System.ini file. You need to add some lines to Vcache and I386 from memory ??? it does work once you get these values right. Did one last week and all worked o.k the next problem you'll have is getting the motherboard drivers etc to get other stuff working !!!!

Do some searches on google for Vcache in win98 later systems etc. I dig up the lines I put in and let you know.

"Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM Installed.

    There are two workarounds:

    1. Use the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to reduce the maximum amount of memory that Vcache uses to 512 megabytes (524,288KB) or less.

    2. Use the System Configuration utility to limit the amount of memory
that Windows uses to 512 megabytes (MB) or less.

Thanks for that, that solution fixed the first issue I was having, although now I'm having another issue, Win98 got most of the way through the install, and it got to the part where it was doing "Programs On The Start Menu" and then it locked up and stopped responding, then when I turned off the computer and turned it back on, it locks up before it can even resume setup. I'm nearly at the point of giving up on it.

You could also run Windows 98 in Virtual Pc, (or Virtual Box or VM Ware)

runs Fine for me with some limited functionality (like no USB, I think on Virtual PC),

Also, later model PC's & hardware, sometimes does not support Windows 9x (like Win 98)

    just another thought

Make sure you have no peripherals connected, usb or otherwise during initial install, and try again. If all else fails then the suggestion Osirus made may be your only option.
