Default Energy REC's - What are their current value?

    Hi,

How does one find out the current price of a 'Renewable Energy Certificate'.

Is there a 'hidden' market somewhere where these things are traded?

    Perhaps a trend graph?

    Thanks

Top right hand corner of that site is a contact via email request for prices.

They have two urgent press releases to save the solar industry. Calling on Rudd to scrap the $100,000.00 cut off for the solar grant. They seem to have won that one but its odd there are no press releases calling for the $8000.00 grant to be reinstated. It’s now worth just $4,400.00 Melbourne.

Yes I know you can email them .... but why is it a secret?

Isn't it supposed to be a market forces thing (like shares)?

What is the current price (the spot value of recs you may hold) and what is the past value trend?

Buggered if I can find a thing!

What's the value of creating REC's if I can't see an open market value?

I think it’s still in a state of flux as to what will happen. If Rudd has his ETS passed without amendment the coal fired power station operators and others will have to shell out for carbon tax or buy REC’s to offset their emissions. At present Rudd’s tax is not in effect so the market for REC’s is speculative at the moment.

Problem is you can sell or lease you REC’s via a broker perhaps to the power company but the power company is going to raise the cost of power as a result of the tax so the return on REC’s will most lightly be dwarfed by the higher costs for power and the roll on effect on other prices.

NU Energy had a estimate of around $1200.00 for the life of the REC’s on a 1 KW solar system which was traded off for a zero cost installation. Latter they gave the option to keep the REC’s for a cost of around $800.00

Turnbull has suggested they will not pass the ETS unless the government protects industries like the power industry by giving them free credits. At present power companies are holding off on new investment in generators because of the uncertainty re the cost of Rudds tax.

If they refuse to built new capacity the job will be left to govenment to fund.

This will be interesting in Victoria as we have a number of old plants and with the desalination plant coming on line they will be highly dependent on interconnects with other states to avoid blackouts.

There was to be a gas powered power station for the desalination plant constructed for $2 billion and talk of carbon capture which was to be trucked to South Australia and pumped down an old gas or oil well there. The new station and dump site fell through. Wind power was also suggested but they went very quiet on that when they found the demand exceeded the lightly output and duty cycle.

Part of the contract for the desalination plant is reportedly it will run flat out for three years which will give the private partners some surety of investment return which also means lots of coal fired power generation and carbon taxes which will rely on REC’s as an off set.

Great to see the hydro projects but I doubt the wind power is going to produce the required power reliably.

My heat pump hws is worth 26 credits and Quantum is giving $39/credit back to me. That is worth $1014 plus $1600 from the Government means a rebate of $2,614 for me. Should cost me about the same as the instillation of an electric hwc.

$39 per REC appears to be around where the current value is .. I think.

    It's not very much.
