Thumbs up Humax 5400Z Card reader Voltage Mod

These are the picture of my humax 5400Z with a BC549C transistor.
On my unit it has droped the voltage from 5volts to 4.46Volts
I will post 2 pics, 1 with writting on it and 1 without. The 1 with the writting is not as clear.

If anyone else trys this and buggers up their system I am in noway responsible.
It did and still does work on mine, and my card isn`t even thinking of getting hot.

I have posted these pics here as I have been sent pm`s about how to and there are also people asking in different threads.

ps: when you cut the track, check with a multimeter that it is cut properly. Otherwise your just waisting your time.

Well I hope these pics help.

    Cheers

I see in swampys mod he goes to the cardreader number 1 pin where you go to 701. Is there any difference?

Here is Swampy`s pic, I cant work out why he ran it to pin 1 of the card reader. When I get my Strong box I`ll pull the humax back apart and have a closer look at it.
I ran mine like how I did so it gets 4.5volts through out the whole card reader.

All thanks go out to SWAMPY cos he`s the 1 that told us about the BC549C transistor.
You could use different parts like resistors or diodes to drop the voltage also.

Thanks for the idea. Could you please specify where the base, collector and emitter are on the diagram to eliminate confusion. Also why can't a diode be used such as a 1n4004 or any other standard diode?

Flat side facing you and the pins are on the bottom.
    Pin 1- Collector-------Left leg
    Pin 2- Base-----------Middle leg
    Pin 3- Emitter---------Right leg

You could use a diode such as a 1n4004 but it doesn`t get the voltage down enough and if you use 2 of them it drop past 4.5volt.
I wanted to keep it as close as I can to 4.5volts.

So min do you use the middle leg (base) and why cant you use a zenner diode?

He said join left(collecter) and center(base) legs together.

The center leg is joined to the left leg.
You can use a zenner diode if you like but you`ll have to find the right 1.
I`ve tryed the 1n4001,1n4004 and neither gets the voltage down enough.
You can put to together and it will go below 4.5volts. I want to keep it as simple as possible.
There will be a heap of ways you can get the voltage down, you just gotta have time to experiment.

Did you run the white card in the box before the mod?
If yes was it getting hot?

I did you it for a whole of 10 minutes. I pulled it out and it was starting to get warm so I said stuff it, I`m not taking any chance`s and hook the transistor back up.
Now it doesn`t seem to change temp from the first time I put it in. Nice and cool.

yes It should have the same card reader.

I have noticed that in some humax the card does not seem to get hot that much but after a month it has a brown mark

Will the BC549C transistor reduce the voltage to the cam on a Humax 5400z as well?
Without having much of an idea..... The transistor goes onto the card reader, right? If so, would the cam slot voltage also be reduced or does the change only occur for the embedded slot?

I cant say for sure, But I think it just affects the card reader and not the cam slot. I`m sure the cam slot is powered by a different source.
When I get a chance I`ll pull mine apart and run some tests and post here.
Wont be for a week or so. I`m flat out with other stuff atm.

    Cheers.
