    Default District 9

Been waiting for a review of this one but it didn’t come up…on here anyway!

So here we go…the first half an hour of this flick is so painful. I thought the whole thing was going to be a documentary style display of how humanity may deal with the whole first contact thing. But it took a nice (un)expected turn and spun into the bloodbath that we all know and love from Hollywood. Effects were good, story was OK, main character was a little bit too nerdy to be credible in a position of authority I think, but he grew balls as the film goes on. Its left the end open for a sequel but I don’t know if this film will be successful enough to justify it…time will tell I guess.

Basically another moral/ethics focused film on how we act when we don’t understand something, and how things can be different with a change of perception. Would we really sacrifice a species for monetary gain? (I guess we are doing that now..)

To me the movie is irrelevant…the theme that interests me is how humanity will deal in the future with two things; one plausible – A.I., and the other maybe not – alien contact. Will our human racial and social (and maybe spec-ial?) prejudice effect us into these new domains. Numerous movies touch on it…the Matrix, Termy, AI…we know about it but don’t talk about it much.

I had a happy clapper friend (Christian) tell me once, that they would never accept conscience (yes, it sounds like they have a “policy”!) AI into their fold because they have no soul…this can only lead to one thing…Matrix becoming a doco! I wonder if aliens have a soul?

Anyway, I digressed there a bit…a good movie, worth a look, makes you think if you want to think, entertains you if you don’t!

    Thanks Ramjet

I heard it cleared over 40 million last weekend in the States which was above expectation given it was a "low budget" movie. I think there very happy with that.

Watch out for Sth Africa, they may well be the next huge place to make movies......There was one other Sth Africian Sci Fi show that I watch and was totally enthrailed with, Charlie Jade..........

Loved it, kept me interested throughout by not following the usual Hollywood blockbuster formula.

Only problem I had with the film (apart from having ET nightmares!) was the fact that everything was recycled from the Halo movie. They could have modified a bit of the props to make it look less like it was Halo.

Have to break this into 3 movies that we all have seen
    was 1/3 aliens, 1/3 ironman, 1/3 cloverfield.
some of the camera work was good. did not hate it, did not love it either. good on em for trying.

man i thought this was my movie of the year so far
i really liked it set in sth africa, kinda gave it a slightly more real feel rather being set in new york, if you wanna think about this as a could happen movie aliens wouldnt give a toss what city they went to.
btw the writer director is from Johannesburg and its based on his short film called "alive in joburg". youtube it.

Finally got to see the movie, I don't know where to start. I tought this was some form of Black comedy at first, the acting was so cliche that I was pissing myself laughing until I realised it was suppose to be serious. The accents alone were annoying but the plot was just bizarre. As for the prawns, cmon they couldn't spend a few more bucks to make something a bit more realistic. So glad I didn't see it at the cinema as would have felt ripped off.

The prawns are based on the NZ bug the Weta, hope the Weta does not hang around any radioactive waste.
