How farking stupid are the microsoft techo's, why is it so farking difficult for them to develope a codec that will play all media file type in windows media players?
I've been having trouble playing certain types of media files, namely avi files in wmp11, first of all, could only get sound, then I downloaded divx7 then I got video only & no sound.
So then I downloaded VLC media player and hey presto!, sound and picks, if thats so simple for the programmers of this open source software....why do these farking idiots at m/s find it so hard to produce a codec to play all files.
geez

Latest K-Lite codec pack fixes WMP11, DVD's MP4's, avis, plays everything I've thrown at it.

Totally agree,
The constant frustration with media player not able to handle video files really pisses me off. As both you and Globe say, vlc player or adding klite to media player fixes most problems but typically microsoft feels that if they didn't have a hand in developing a video file format, it should be ignored as a punishment to anyone who thinks they know better.
Apple are an even worse offender with their insistence on specialised files for their gear
I use GOM. It will olay anything I throw at it.
Some people need to get their finger out of their arse so that the brain can get some oxygen"
never heard of GOM, but why bother with WMP, just use media player classic or VLC
...In Somnis Veritas...
is another great player. I love how it remembers where movie was up to if i quit.
**You can also download subtitles through it (on the fly)**
Cheers.

Democracy: Three wolves and a sheep voting on what's for lunch.
Its not microsoft its whoever is encoding the videos you are downloading. I must admit I was very impressed to see most common codecs included with mp11/win7.
From what I understand it's more of a lincensing issue.
Anyway Windows 7 (WMP12) has MPEG4, H264, 3GPP and AAC built-in which is nice.
Probably still need a Matroska splitter but oh well.
As for your file, I guess someone encoded it with a diffrent audio codec to video codec. I gots some AVI's here that have Divx video with OGG audio, lots of things won't play them.
As grommet80 says, it's licencing.
Everything that goes into Windows software has 'generally' got to work.
Think of the bigger picture: A small firm starts making training videos. It uses a small piece of software to do so. You buy the video and finds it doesn't run on WMP11... But other players VLC and so on work. You rant about it!
Then you have the hospital with 1000 patients. The hospital has video historys that all recent operations are recorded. Some wise guy gets a training video and works out that the codecs in XP won't play it. Being clever, he installs a codec which rewrites/modifies WMP11 core codecs and the training video runs great - but now doesn't run the others.
But unknown to him, this codec has a trojan on board that sends user usage to it's makers and the hospital and his new super duper pc at home are now at risk...
MS licence stuff: 1) To make money and 2) For 'hopefully' stability.
Messing with codecs can kill pc's. I know!
Think of all the drivers out there for video cards. Read about the bugs in Cataylist and Nvidia drivers! Even THEY can't get it right.
Then think of all that has to work inside of XP and never mind the billions millions of web sites with Java and Flash (DIY sites), out there...
So don't be so quick to blame MS. It's a MASSIVE issue these codecs.
If you've downloaded a Bolivian buggery animal video clip from your boyfriend from the mountain top where the sheep are happy and he has smile on his face and then complain it won't run on your 286 VGA computer on Win 3.0, just check your codecs. WMP11 only has a certain amount of codecs.
I personaly use VLC now.
A very good forum for Codecs and Video and stuff is called Afterdawn. AKAIK, there isn't anything that that site doesn't know about codecs.
Ill second Klite
mediaplayer classic with cccp codec pack (combined community codec pack) will play most everything
add on quicktime light and real alternative and your good to go
oh and a 3gp codec if you watch phone videos

I was just going to suggest the CCCP. I wondered why it wasnt suggested before. Perhaps it is not as widely regarded in the community as i was lead to believe?
Anyway on my girlfriends HTPC i put that on it and wmp has yet to not play any file Ive put on it (although it hasn't really been tried out with to many file types)
