Anyone?
I realise that there is no definitive answer, and i intend on doing all the propper research, but I just wish to know if any PCI wireless cards stand out from the pack for these taskts, ie can load on opensource firmware - or is compatible with all the fun linux apps or has good/range/suitable antennae upgrades etc.
Thanks, RHCP.

one that has an external antenna connection is a start.

Why does it need to be pci?
The cards I have used are PCMCIA and have external antenna connections and seem to work best for wardriving (for me)
You could use a PCI to PCMCIA adapter??
Annother option is adding an external antenna to an inbuilt laptop wireless card if you feel confident
I use a TPlink pci card with a tplink 9db aerial mounted on the roof racks
They are sort of OK, but I bet there is better out there.
I find the refresh rate too slow. you have to wait 30 seconds to a minute for it to scan correctly, and then the AP needs to be added to profile managment (which can only hold 16 AP's)

I thought the directional Pringles tube were the go?

Nope. They are directional.
If your war driving, you don't know where they are going to be, so a omnidirectional is better.
I guess you could run 2 x pci cards, one with a omni directional for finding them and another with a directional aerial to save driving the extra 100m, and zooming in on the open AP

Alfa 500mW USB Wireless. I know its USB and not PCI but is 500mw and support / reviews are great.
Thanks for the repleis guys. I will check out some of your recommendations. I've been a bit too busy with other computer problems to do any further reading. I know only certain cards/chipsets can be used to inject packets into a network.
BTW, its a matx computer, hence PCI - works nice in a van
Cheers, RHCP.

if you're up for some serious 'fun' check the aircrack-ng wiki for a list of cards that support packet injection.
i've had success with atheros chipsets all the way to broadcom and zydas.
as said before use an omnidirectional antenna to 'scout' the area. then use a 'cantenna' to hone in on the ap's. or stay at home, jump on the roof, and have a play with an old au* dish, you'll get like 15-20db gain depending how well your antenna is constructed.
For the ppl who lay their router antenna horizontal you may need to skew your 'cantenna'.
get a copy of backtrack and bob's your uncle.
