Many old-timers will fondly remember Cherry keyboards, reknown for their high quality. In later years they also manufactured smartcard readers. The German company that bought them out last year, , has just released a nice product that combines the two.
What caught my eye in their was the following:
"It is suitable for access monitoring, network logon or card-based internet transactions."
I need to write and tell them they're mistaken. Austar and the Police both told me that smartcard interfaces are only used for Pay TV piracy! And they would know!!
Look Here -> |
Let me see if I have this correct.
If a "smartcard interfaces are only used for Pay TV piracy", then
1. my Austar box MUST be Pirating pay tv (and yes that would be every pay tv viewer that is using a smartcard interface is a pirate now).... And here i was, thinking that cause I pay austar for it it must be ok....
2. That since my visa card as a smart card chip on it, (which would require a smartcard interface to use,) I should be able to use it to watch "free" pay tv. I must send it back cause it didnt work....
LOL
Would these be more or less the same?

They're similar, but the G83-6744 shown above is higher quality. In particular it has landed contacts (rather than the more common slide contacts) which mean the card socket can be used brutally for many more years without having bad connection or falling to bits. Slide contact sockets also cause wear on cards.
The cheap sockets included in Jaycar kits and DM500 clones aren't designed for heavy duty use and their springs go after a while; I've seen several faulty worn-out sockets over the years.
