Do you think whitey has much to do with it? Personal thoughts here, number crunchers feel free to add your sources, but i think given the initial costs of whitey, most people who had a sub probably kept it and those like me who never had a sub, still wouldn't if whitey died tomorrow cos I still only watch 2 channels of it and a total of about 3 hours per week tops.

I think there is no mention of pirate cars cos if the shareholders found out, they would bail leaving the company high and dry, the domino effect it could cause through the industry could collapse it.

A couple of thousand whiteys wouldnt cause that, its most likely cause is investment in new hardware such as mystar and flinders, or "significants" as the article calls them. Who dreamt up that term?

The company's net profit fell 63.2 per cent to $77.31 million, but profit before interest, tax and significant items increased 26 per cent to $106 million

There was an actual increase but due to investment and other steps is the only reason at the end they showed a drop, this is similar to when they and fox did the change over yrs ago.

I don't, Selectv suck in terms of content.

A friend of mine can't even be bothered plugging in his select gamma anymore.

He is planning to convert it to something useful...like aurora.

Part of the reason for the fall in profit seems to be due to a decline in average revenue per user of 8%, even though subscribers increased by nearly 70,000. This would seem to indicate that viewers are keeping their basic subs but cutting back on the extras. They apparently feel that they don't represent very good value for money, but don't want to be restricted to just FTA offerings. A less restrictive regime might well overcome this, with greater freedom to mix and match channels according to taste. I doubt that the recreational and hobby use of security defeating wafers would have impacted on these results, as it was not until third quarter last year that their existence became known amongst the technologically elite who are members here. The bogans that don't belong to Austech still wouldn't have a clue.

    Agreed.

I think providers need to develop and exploit specialist markets. Select is a start, but it needs to target subscribers needs. I think the overwhelming opinion for Austar or Foxtel is that we have a hundred channels of junk to choose from most of the time. I think it would be more attractive if one could choose more attractive packages - eg 10 channels of movies, all in high def 16:9, etc.
It just doesn't make sense to me that, for Foxtel, you have to subscribe to a basic package of junk before you can subscribe to movies or sport, etc

Additionally, I don't understand why it costs more to subscribe to more selections. After all, you can only watch one program at a time. How does it make sense to pay more to have more channels you can't watch?
