    Question Big screen TV

    Whos got one?
    Which is better? (Lcd or PLasma)
    Is the experience worth the high price?
    Looking at around $1700 I reckon & it would have to be a beauty for that. Dunno, might get talked into spending more I guess.
    I'm still coming to grips with the high prices! In the past I'm used to only buying second hand or cheap new Tv's because as we know they all break down sooner rather than later.
    Most of the brands only offer 12 months warranty. This is a massive turn off for me trying to decide whether to even buy one or not. You can purchase extra warranty but if a manufacturer won't stand by his product with standard warranty, that's a worry for me. Just me maybe but I don't think it fair to purchase extra warranty anyhow.
    Who else can't get their brain around spending big $$$ on a TV?
    Should I just forget about buying one unless it's an expensive model. $2500 ++
    Is one brand better than another or are they all out of the same factory in taiwan?
    Would love some Tech savvy people here willing to share their knowledge?
    Or just anyone here with some words of wisdom when it comes to deciding which model to buy or have you just got an experience to share (good or bad).
    Now I'm not really a tight arse! I don't mind spending $$ on something that is good value & will last.
    I just don't have money to waste!
    Happy to be here......still

    I couldn't vote, cause I have 2x LCD and PLASMA in the house and love them all.

    LCD is useful in rooms with plenty of windows (reflections) (42 in and 32 in)
    PLASMA is good cause it's 50 inch and great for big groups of people.

    Foxtel looks like crap on ALL three.

    Complete waste of money if you're expecting high definition in anything other than free to air sports.

    Channel changes on high definition tuners are patheticly slow...drives you insane....

    For me...I won two of them for sales achievement with toshiba laptops.

    So the price is right, would I pay the $2k? NOPE.

    Warranty? The samsung plasma came with 3 years, the Sony LCD 3 years, the NEC lcd 2 years.

    The plasma blew in the first year, capacitors faulty.

    The picture on all is excellent in high definition.

    I prefer the Sony, marginally.

    Plasma is a dead project , LCD continues to grow.

    So if you want technology thats outdated and going out the door at bargain prices , go Plasma.

    If you want what is going to be the norm , buy LCD. Also buy a long extended warranty if you buy Plasma.

    I have 2 x 106 cm LCD's which put out a brilliant picture ( as long as it is not Foxtel as Z80 mentioned , but thats nothing to do with the units themselves just the shit resolution Foxtel is in )

    Edit : I paid $1500 each , mine are Tevion. They dont have an inbuilt high definition tuner ( which suits me as I have added the HD box of my choice ).
    I have 2 x Hotchip HD HDMI boxes connected to mine as the Tevion's have HDMI , my mate has a Sony HD box on his and admits mine craps on his for picture quality. )

    Double edit : Have a look at some major store catalogues and check the difference between the amouny of Plasmas for sale compared to LCD's.

    I cant be bothered doing a triple edit

    Poddy , think of it from this perspective.

    An LCD is in effect the same as your LCD computer monitor ( please dont tell me you have a 15' CRT ). As a rule they last a long time. I have a number of old laptops here that all have LCD screens , the LCD screens all still work and they are early pentium 2 's.

    When it comes to repairs on Plasma's , most are a throw away item. Ask this particular question in the Electronics forum if you like , as there are a few guys in there that repair TV's. Prior to the forum crash , there was a few threads with a number saying they are basically a bin job when they go.

    Both my LCD's have Samsung LCD panels in them. You will find that even the cheapest LCD's will have a panl from a well known company as there are only a few companies that make them. So apart from the panel , its just basically the electronics that run it where problems can occur.

    I have avoided this problem by buying units that dont have a HD tuner in them ( internally , so I can just plug a HD terrestrial box of my choice in.

    you can buy a 42" plasma that will do 1080i with sd tuner/hdmi etc for under $900 now. add a $200 240 to 110 volt transformer from dick smiths and run them at 110v and they will last a lot longer.......

    can't go wrong at that price, have a couple and am impressed with the quality.

    TV is over rated anyway

    I personally have plasma, LCD & good old CRT.

    As said above, you only get out what you put in, so fox looks fine on a 68cm CRT NEC as it's low res anyway

    I prefer LCD over plasma, but it will be outdated in the next couple of years anyway.

    The next new thing is Organic LCD. Already at trade shows & should be main stream in < 5 years

    OLED displays versus LCDs

    Because of their small size and relatively high efficiency, OLEDs are ideally suited for use in flat-panel displays. Liquid crystal display (LCD) technology is the current leader in this area. So how do OLEDs stack up?

    As you've probably guessed, OLED displays offer significant advantages over LCDs. Being self-luminous, they require no backlighting. By contrast, LCDs require either an external light source (reflective type) or a fluorescent or LED backlight (transflective type). No backlighting means OLED displays are smaller in size, use less power, weigh less and cost less.

    Their self-luminous nature is also responsible for two other important advantages. First, they have a virtually unlimited viewing angle (165°). LCDs, on the other hand, are limited by the "aperture" effect. In addition, they have very high brightness and contrast (>100:1). This is something that LCDs can't hope to match. A backlit LCD typically looks "washed out" under bright light.

    Equally importantly, OLED displays have almost instantaneous update speed. The response time of LCDs has always been a problem, particularly when displaying real-time video. The microsecond switching speeds of the OLED has entirely eliminated this issue!
    Click for larger image

    In summary, OLED displays have:

    * High brightness and contrast
    * Ultra-wide viewing angle
    * No backlight required
    * Thin, compact form factor
    * Fast response time
    * Low power consumption
    ..............

    according to some sources, more than 80 companies and universities around the world are involved in OLED research. Clearly, there is a great deal of interest and much potential in this new technology.

    For example, several companies have recently demonstrated highly flexible display panels fabricated on plastic substrates. Apart from making panels much more robust, this breakthrough could also allow very cheap mass production, where displays are produced in a roll-to-roll, printed medium style.

    Yet another discovery involves the use of non-metallic transparent anodes. Manufacturers will soon be able to make OLED panels that are over 85% transparent (when not active). The applications are mind-boggling!

    As far as fixing them you are correct Sanity.

    Of course when the backlight goes on any LCD they are also a bin job.

    Consider that they are essentially a fluorescent tube that wears out...

    Unfortanetly the OLED tech is still expensive and I'm not 100% convinced Sony has fixed the burn out problems that they had with OLED in its early days (I think the blue colour dissappeared and if you have ever tried to use a projector that is missing red you know how fustrating it will be).

    I guess it depends on your room set up for what you wish to get. I know that I've been looking (though $$ may be an issue) recently and I'm looking at an LCD these days.

    LOL Sanity, I'm still using a 17" CRT monitor, because I like it so much never felt the need to upgrade

    Picture on these is way above anything currently available, the technology has a way to go though, the current 11" model at $2499 is never going to be a big seller, once they can raise the size and lower the price they will definately be worthwhile, the next big thing?, maybe

    It looks like JB HIFI are having 10% off all LCD and Plasma TV's at the moment going off the Google add I just saw at the top of the page.

    lol@ 17CRT , it wasnt that long ago I remember being stoked at buying a second hand one.

    Now I have a 22' LCD monitor and I dont even use it.....I plug my laptop in to it about once every 2 months or so as I no longer have a desktop computer..

    plasma may be dying out but it doesnt mean its inferior, i would still buy a plasma over an lcd anyday, picture quality they piss all over them. When it comes to them both, u get what you pay for, you buy a cheapy and usually the thing dies a lot quicker. This is why every knob jumps on today tonight after 6 months after they pay 800 bucks for a tv expecting it to be shit hot Depends what size you want though and your room. Pioneer make great plasmas as do fujitsu but be prepared to pay for them and they will last a long time, the expectencies for life on both panels are around 20 years.

    Sony Bravia 46inch 1080p LCD

    Foxtel looks fantastic on it as does most decoders, if you know how to connect them properly (component - 1080i upscaler - HDMI out)
    Depends on the source material though, any of the higher res streams are great (which is most of them) any animated movie looks just as good as 1080i HD TV, i would even say better than DVD.
    Display has a fast tuner for quick channel changes, PS3, Mediagate and other HD HDMI/DVI sources looks great. PC looks great (good for those with THPC's)

    Plus, you can edit all inputs. Although i only have one, HDMI and that's it.

    I'd disagee with that point Oceanboy as you cant " Turn shit in to a monument " in my opinion .( I am referring of course to Foxtel ).

    Foxtel transmit in a format that is worse than standard definition and a number of their channels arent even in 16:9.

    I am watching Skynews at the moment , how can you turn 544 X 576 in 4:3 in to anything that can be labelled as fantastic ? I know what fantastic looks like , Seven HD for example is what I would call " fantastic ". But I cant see how you can turn something that is transmitted in shit quality in to something fantastic when its crap to start with ?

    firstly, let me start with the company i own is warranty agent for philips, panasonic, toshiba, fujitsu, loewe, metz, orion, schaub lorenz, uniden (for LCD's), used to do lg's but thats another story, so we've got a bit of experience in the field

    Now, plasmas are dead technology, thats number one.
    lcd's have gotten alot better in the last 2 years.
    the advantage that OLED's have over the others is thier ability to "regrow" dead pixels, that is thier big deal, as far as us tech's go that a REAL BIG deal!

    what you need to look at is RESOLUTION, thats what gives you a better picture quality, now in saying that you also have to take into account the fact that almost all shows are filmed useing a standard resolution camera so it doesn't matter whether you have a high def screen or not if the source is standard def, thats all your going to see. now the best resolution by both figures and picture is DLP Digital Light Proccesor, whether in rear projection or projector (my personal favorite, after all how big do you want the screen, bigger you say, move the projector back and get a bigger wall) and in DLP there are 2 main types, ones with 1 DLP mirror it uses a spinning colour wheel in 7 segments red, green, blue, white, red, green, blue. the other type uses 3 dlp mirror one for each colour, this is even better as no moving parts, therefore even less to break down, after saying all that it's really personal opinion.

    poddy, the fact that they all pretty much come with 12 months warranty has to do with cost to cust, philips just recently went from 3 years to 12months and that was to bring the cost of the unit down, the longer the warranty the higher the cost of the unit, and ANYTHING that costs alot ("alot" to me might be different to you) i would advise getting extended warranty if you think it cost alot, (some of the units we work on are WELL over $10k.
    When I explained to the guy what avatar I wanted, that wasn't what I meant!

    Yep, i would of totally agreed with you.... on paper it makes no sense. It's like saying an MP3 is lossless.
    But now i have one sitting in my lounge room, use it everyday, have had a critic from an AV magazine down over summer and he was just as impressed as me.

    So what i'm saying is, i'm not just sprouting a bunch of techy note book stuff and reading the specs. This is a real world test, and at the end of the day i sit only 2.6 meters from the screen and this is outcome i see with my eyes.

    Don't get me wrong, i'm as picky as the next bloke, i'd scream if i saw a dead pixel. I have a PS3 and HD player to test HD material, so i understand the limits of the display, i'm saying that the good streams from Fox or anywhere (when correctly upscaled) look pretty dam good. Yes i said fantastic and i stick by that for anything animated or on the 720 x streams.

    BTW 544 x 576 is nearly the worst stream you could get, i said the good streams!!! 720 x etc

    What D&A converter do you use Sanity? What upscaler do you use?

    Anyway, this topic was about Displays, not the short comings of source material. I'd aslo buy a Sharp Aquos. At $1700 poddy, you'll buy a good display, just not very big one. Buy cheap = Buy shit.... or in this day and age Buy Cheap = Buy twice, as you will end up replacing it when it dies.

    plasma itself is a fairly "dead" technology, only because it costs too much to manafacture. It doesnt mean its shit though, plasma is still the best on the market for picture. As for picture quality, resolution isnt the do all and end all of a panel. Things such as grey scale is more important on a tv then res, there are good 720p panels which leave 1080p panels for dead

    It seems you have gone back and added more to your post. The stream I picked was the channel I was watching when I posted. Unfortunately Foxtel has numerous channels that run in shit 4:3.... Sky News , Fox Classics , VH1 , Music Max....I could rattle off plenty more but I cant check as I am recording the boxing on my DM7020.

    I have never run anything more than any standard connections available ( depending on what connections that particular unit has/had ). I have owned and used almost every popular Sat receiver ever discussed on the forum and a few more to boot. D and A convertor ? None. Upscaler ? None. Its Foxtel and its worse than SD in general , I am not going to waste my time with it. If wanted to watch decent quality , Foxtel wouldnt be my selection to see it.

    Digital Terrestial ? HDMI to HDMI via Hotchip HD STB.

    To the topic , name brands dont excite me much these days as I have seen numerous " cheap " brands out perform them too often. I was more than happy to buy 2 x 106 cm LCD without built in HD tuners rather than 1 x namebrand with HD tuner so I have the choice of plugging my own in via a HD STB after seeing some of the shitfull looking pictures some name brand units produce.

    My neighbour has the same LCD with a Sony HD STB connected to it and even he admits his looks like crap compared to mine. He said he only bought it because it was a name brand and he regrets it.

    After looking at a large range from cheap to expensive in numerous stores , it was a mixed bag when it came down to what they actually put out with a number of brand names that looked woefull. There were a few cheapies that also didnt look good.

    In the end , after watching 1080 nothing really looks " good ".

    So you base your answer on something you have never seen nor even owned, and spend the rest of your answer fluttering about sat receivers you've had and a few resolutions streamed on Fox. I rest my case.

    So what service do you get with your Tevion? I guess you can always stock up on milk and bread while you're there.
