20 pins ??? all you need is 5 and a ground mate, recheck what you have done, and i think your wires may be too long as well

Hey folks,
I managed to solder on the 20 pins to the 8776 board, connected everything up and jkeys tells me that it is an 'unknown device'. The box still powers up ok and the solder job is fine.
Here is a pic of my current setup:
Wired up as per the diagram:Code:http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2465/18092009048j.jpg
I'm using solderless jtag connectors going from the jtag pins on the board to the 20 pin ide cable. Also using a 'wiggler' jtag interface (that a mate lent me who got it off ebay). I have also tried with and without the lpt extension cable - both yield the exact same results.Code:http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/4343/jtag.jpg
Jkeys is using the right def files, preferences set correctly and have tried power cycling the box then clicking 'detect'.
Any ideas here? I'm completely stumpted at the moment!
Cheers,
keegs

I think a wise man here said no more than 10cm wires is best.
Thanks tagg. Obviously I need TMS, TCK, TDI, TRST and TDO, but which ground pin do I use? Does it matter?
Also is the jtag interface ok?

As jimbo123 said anyone should be fine

get a leg of a resistor and solder it across every ground pin also make sure you have connected the +v to the 3.3 on the board
make sure the wires are no longer than 10cm

What brand of tsop are they thosiba 58FVB160AFT-70 if so i have modified the .def file to suit these chips.
What a mess, look at all those wires going into the board. Piss that ebay piece of junk off , go down to jaycar or whoever and build a basic jtag that has about seven wires to connect and then connect that to your printer port. They are very simple to construct, cost about 5 bucks and take about 20 minutes to make. Heaps of members here have made the same jtag and had zero problems with them. Also make sure you jumper JB12 on the board.

Also another thing. my cable length from my printer port to my jtag is about a meter long. My wires from my jtag to the abs board are about 30 cm long, so i don't know what this "10"cm thing is about. In fact most times I read about this subject the wire lengths seem to just get shorter and shorter.. Next someone will say they have to be 5cm long....

If your cable is long it may work depending on the characteristics of the parallel port line driver on your motherboard, and to a lesser extent on the characteristics of your cable (wire thickness, shielding, twisted pair grounding etc).
Cable length being "too long" is not a simple matter of working or not working. It's about probability in the particular environment on the day. It's a bit like whether it's safe to have unprotected casual sex without condoms. A man who boasts that he's done so for many years without catching anything isn't necessarily lying. But it's more risky. Taking precautions doesn't always guarantee anything either, but it changes the odds.
Yes but there is a point where it gets out of hand. Sticking 5 dinga's on your knob is not going to make you any safer. You still want to be able to work on the thing without having to cram everything in and make it fiddly. I've used this on 5 different PC's so I say bollocks to 10cm wires.

Thanks for all the posts guys, appreciate the help
Today i have tried to eliminate the length by getting rid of the ide cable in the pic, and having the solderless (now soldered to the board) wires directly to the Jtag interface. Jkeys is still saying 'unknown device'.
Tomorrow if i get the time, I will attempt to build a jtag interface.
Will tell you guys how I went.

I have never never needed the 3.3v, have you tried a different computer ??
