Default My 7yr old asked for a Psp or DS for his 8th bday any sugestions

Hi there all, just a quick question, my 7yr old has asked for either a DS or a Psp for his Birthday and I was wondering what thoughts people have on both. I didn't want this to be a bitch fight about mine is better than yours type thing just any info on both from personal experiance, eg games available and quality of games. Extra things they can do and ease of loading games if it is possible.
    Cheers

For a 7yr kid best choice would be a DS and then look for a R4 or M3 Simply

    very good advice here mate!

some PSP features are aimed at teens/adults etc My youngest is 7 and she struggles to hold a psp as they tend to be a lit big for kids to hold.

    She's not a small/short girl either(with her dad being 6'4" doesn't help her either...LOL)

DS are very easy to operate, the kids seem to treat them as pda's as they have stylus', R4 card is very easy to load.

Definately go for the DS mate, thats if you can get one as most stores are struggling with Nintendo stock, beit Wii or DS.

    Cheers

Another vote for the DS. I bought both for my kids and the DS get used all the time, the PSP has been sitting in the cupboard for the last few months.

If you want simplicity DS is the way to go. The touch face makes it easy to use and there is a wide selection of games for the DS. Another bonus is that the DS closes up so helps protect the screen from scratches in the kids bag.

As for quality on the DS it ranges between excellent and awful. Anything released by Nintendo is usually fairly good but there is also a lot of "shovelware" on this console too. No real bonuses with the console, and if you wish to "load games" onto it, its simple with an R4 or M3 simply, I have a 2Gb card with mine (and I hate to say it but its full!) and I load stuff onto it all the time.

I dont think there is a time in recent memory where I havent had a game to play on my DS (and I now have a backlog), this is something that is generally rare for me on consoles.

I have a 10yr old and a 7yr old, they both have the ds. A friend went to buy one last month and had trouble getting one, got a fatds second hand from eb games for $75 and a couple of games. He couldn't get a new one anywhere.
Anyway it seems all the kids that come over our place have the ds, I assume its more popular for that age group.

The differences a little bit more than that between the older Phat and the newer lite model.

From memory (Correct me if I am wrong people's)
The newer version is lighter, bigger screen, brighter screen, closes up a bit better - my opinion, better battery life.

The screen size is the same between the two. The Lite is brighter. Also has a better storage slot for the stylus and as you say it closes up much better.

IMHO is you are buying a DS get the lite, it now comes in 4 colours too (White, Black, Pink and Blue).

My kids have both PSP and DS, and I find my 7yo only plays the DS. Like all have said its easy to use and get games for. My 9yo loves the PSP, cause he is a bit older and can look after it a bit more, both great handhelds, but I would go with DS with R4 or M3 as suggested above.

newer version looks to have bigger screen, its just the smaller case that does this.

Yeah I would have to say go with the DS too, the download and play support is great for mates of his that might have a DS console as well.

Tho for the young ones around 7 to 9, I would more recommend the CycloDS card to use with it as its much simpler to use and setup, and the interface is very simple to use as well.

Have to give a +1 for the CycloDS - great card to use and very easy for the kids to navigate
