    Default Austar Foxtel merger?

I though i heard a 3 second report of a Austar Foxtel merger in the pipe line tonight on the news.

A quick Google brought this up.

Austar (ASX: AUN.ax) up 5c to 125c yesterday on talk of a merger with Foxtel and as they negotiate an extension to their debt facilities. AUN up 1.5c to 126.5c.

    From here;

Wonder if this is due to the talk of Telstra having to sell off its portion of Foxtel due to the new legislation.

JP Morgan predicted last November that Foxtel will "inevitably" buy out Austar within a matter of years. how the Sydney Morning Herald covered it.

Media analysts say a marriage of Foxtel and Austar is inevitable.

The slowdown in consumer spending and the threat of a prolonged advertising recession has renewed speculation of a merger between the pay-TV companies Foxtel and Austar.

"We believe a merger/acquisition of Foxtel and Austar is inevitable," JPMorgan's media analyst, Laurent Horrut, said in research note to clients.

The most likely scenario would involve Foxtel taking over its regional counterpart, with a combination of the two businesses expected to wield cost savings of about $75 million. "It's been attempted before," Horrut said.

Takeover talks between the two companies collapsed in May last year when Telstra - which owns half of Foxtel - refused to cough up more than $1.80 a share for Austar, which is controlled by John Malone's US media group, Liberty Global. Liberty reportedly wanted $2 a share for the company. Since then Austar's share price has fallen by two-fifths to close yesterday at 79.5c.

However, a deal would still be some time off: both companies were likely to seek to become "more mature cash-flow generators" in their own right before slashing costs in such a move, Horrut said.

Twenty-eight per cent of households in Australia receive pay TV, leaving Foxtel and Austar with room to grow despite the downturn. But it's hard to forecast their performance as the subscription sector hasn't seen a severe recession before.

doesn't have the same ring to it, does it.....

    or just "Foxtel' (everywhere)

Not being a financial guru I dont understand all the financial rhetoric but I had the distict impression that Austar has been a financial albatross almost since day one.
No one expected the first few years of operations to be profitable as very few new enterprises are but not to be as poor a result as I read it to be.
Even the now expired Monopoly and the 'No Poaching' policy by both Foxtel and Austar didnt help the bottom line over the years.
Brief and carefully worded reports of the company having to go 'Cap in Hand' for finance have appeared a number of times in the press, more times I think than any reports of making a profit.
Some reports years ago on the PayTV companies in the US said it wasnt the 'Gold Mine' so many said it was when PayTV was started here.
The only thing Austar did that saved their bacon according to a report in a finacial column was buying up frequency licences for a microwave (wireless Pay) that was in use in Darwin and some ruraL towns but later abandoned in favour of all Satellite coverage but they used the licences as collaterol for some time and have in recent times sold them for Wireless Internet, like Unwired and Naked.
Austar want to update and make available the new Mystar2 HD stb to their customers but how will they finance it??
They are asking for current customers to 'Register their Interest' in the new Mystar2, so will they take those requests to a supplier to show they have a base of customers willing to pay the extra fees for them and the new channels to obtain the new stb's on 'consignment' ?
You know, supply now and get paid later ??
Almagamation seems the most viable but will the ACCC allow it or, if it comes to the crunch they say, 'Either we Amalgamate or we're GONE !!'
Optus did it a few years ago and got their way so why not this?

I can't see how it will be possible for Foxtel to take over Austar until Telstra off load their 50% share of Foxtel........

Would be interesting to see if this does go ahead and Austar clients then migrate over to NDS.

This would solve may ongoing issues for Foxtel and Austar, I dout Foxtel would want to pay a licsence for two seperate encryptions.

    Hmmmm.

Foxtel want to buy out Austar, files appear that allow the public to view free tv with a white card, Austar share prices are on shaken ground.

Offer $1.80, Austar wants $2.00, Foxtel call it off.

Wait for share price to fall to nothing, Foxtel start the negotiations again.

Id like to see how the dates with white card files appearing and Foxtels plans of taking Austar.

    Conspiracy theory.
