Default the inevitable debate we all must partake: LCD v Plasma

well i am considering purchasing a new tv, lcd or plasma which will it be?
i dont have the budget for one in the high thousands, maybe 1500 to 2000 but i dunno. i have a few questions on them first and i reckon the answer will be to just stick with the 68cm crt i already have

id like a 42" screen, ive read a little about lcd's and plasmas and perhaps plasmas have the edge slightly?
the other thing i am considering is resolution, we would all love a true 1080 res screen with an endless supply of blueray movies but thats just not the case is it folks!

the truth is all i really watch on tv is 350mb tv shows and 700mb movies and im kinda guessing they are gonna look rather crap on any 42" screen, am i right?
this is why i am also interesting in thoughts on the lower res screens at 42"

i just dont watch enough actual tv to justify 1500/2000.

do we have any thoughts, ideas, suggestions on the matter?

p.s. sorry if this is in the wrong section

i usually would say plasma but these new lcd's are getting pretty good so il leave that for the debate.

as for watching pc files on hte tv, i got a cheap 42"plasma that can run upto 1080i (not p) a few years ago and found that anything that looks good on my monitor looks good on my plasma. although i now stream through my xbox via hdmi and the quality is better than vga. wish it had dvi and more hdmi's thou. anyway cost me $1500 atleast 3 years and not a prob, looks better than my mate's sony bravia and there his words.
Stop being so stupid.. it’s my turn!!

Was going to say Ford vs Holden but reading Fernbays post need to throw in Toyota too!
I have a 47inch lcd and am very happy with it. If you are watching from the side of the room the angle does detract from viewing pleasure, don't know if that's the same with all flat screen panels or just lcd.

They say plasma is better in a dark room, LCD better in light.

They also say that looking at an LCD is like looking at a painting, plasma is like looking through a window.

All I can say is that if going the LCD, get a full 100hz model as mine isn't and it's starting to really annoy me now!

Plasmas are so old school now that burn heaps of power.

Plasma get sparkels & speckels when the heat starts to cause critical component values to drift

Both technologies are developing rapidly making it very hard to compare.

I also have both and enjoy every aspect of them .
My advice is look for a better (cheapper) deal within reputable brands and go for it. No matter plasma, LED or LCD it will be as long as you compare main parameters like resolution and contrast level.

LED is now the way to go. Full HD and 200hz, not 100hz.

The picture displayed on the LED's is simply stunning.

If you cant afford one, i would go LCD. Had both and the lcd leaves the plasma for dead.

Disagree with that now. The ones a few years back definitely was a consideration but mine doesn't have that issue.

There was a thread recently about all this LCD vs Plasma and it's worth a read also.
I reckon get a panasonic and you should be able to get a full hd 42" close to $2k.

    Thats my opinion too Godzilla.

I will add that LED shits over both of them and would be my choice if was after a new tv.

Plasmas are dying technolodgy not many companys makeing them anymore.
LCD probably best suit your budget but LED is the way to go until lazer tv's hit the market anyway.

Totally true if your set has an IPS lcd screen such as found in Panasonic LCD TV's. Not sure about other brands but I found the Panasonics really good in this area
