One of the appeal judges stated:

In 2004, FOXTEL initiated civil proceedings ... over allegedly dealing in equipment, software and information to assist consumers pirate subscription television signals via ‘card sharing’ (a form of illegal piracy using broadcast streams from the Optus C1 satellite and illegal authorisation over the internet).
Foxtel don't seem to know the difference between selling pirated cards and selling the equipment to engage in card sharing. There is a world of difference. Selling card sharing equipment is quite legal although card splitters may or may not be. Foxtel seem to be deliberately muddying the waters. My understanding of the original civil case is that it had nothing to do with card sharing and that card sharing only started after the demise of the gold cards.
The point is that the legality or otherwise of 'card sharing' has yet to be decided, despite Foxtel winning this appeal.
BTW, the answer to the forum heading 'What Happens to Pirates' is that they get filthy rich, and any court imposed penalty or damages is usually small change. Why else would you pursue a costly and doubtful appeal unless you had lots of bananas to throw around?

If greedy corporations like Shitel continue to charge like wounded bulls for shit repeats day in day out, no wonder people will find another alternatives to get card sharing with family members, I'd even join up an org that can offer this service at a greatly reduced rate compared to these corporate ripp-offs.

I would think you would be correct. But that would also be spare change to what was made over a number of years.
If I remember right the Bankruptcy act doesnt protect you from court awarded penalties, Income Tax and Child Support. Still, its hard getting blood out of a stone if all the blood has been syphoned off to a bunch of rocks

Sellers shafted us and made a killing doing it.
I have no doubt this will happen again with whiteys.
They use this hobby to gain a profit. They have no interest in the hobby other than using it to start their own businesses and are just leeches.
If they were bona fide hobbyists, the data to enable us to program gammas would be freely available, not for sale..
