Default Help starting in web page design

Wanting to create a website - got a few ideas and concepts already. I have absolutley no background in websites, I have dabbled a little bit with HTML but have googled a lot and like the idea of joombla(?).

I have looked at various forums but they appear to be for people with a basic or extended background in websites.

Can someone point me in the right direction? I would like something free to use, easy to keep secure, and easy to learn as well. Bare with me, I'm not a dunce, just no background in this sorta stuff.

    meh, why re-invent the wheel?

Take a look at Wordpress, I know it's a blogging platform but you can easily make a static website out of it.

Google Wordpress themes for thousands of nice designs.

Here's a half assed one I made for a mate. This ones a blog, but it's easily modified. Half an hour to set up.

Looks damn good - whats the security aspects like? Easily hacked? Im a bit paranoid about security.

And is it possible to assemble it offline? The ability to assemble offline is a big necessity with me.

Wordpress ican be server based and is a two click install with fantastico. (if your hosting has cpanel), auto upgrade can be set up, then it's a one click upgrade. It's secure as long as you run the latest version, currently 2.84. You can also limit access via plugins, here's a members site I run:

Here's a few websites powered by wordpress.

When you say assemble offline, the Wordpress standard install looks very basic, the themes are uploaded via ftp, then you have the template online, the content can be generated offline, and easily added. It's one the easiest things I've ever done.

Here's a good argument for wordpress.

What sort of website do you want to make?

If it is a static website - one where the content does not change, or very rarely changes - then using a PHP based CMS like wordpress or joomla may not be necessary. You can probably make it using frontpage, dreamweaver, or one of the free WYSIWYG editors.

If it is a dynamic website such as a blog or multi-product e-commerce store then you can start looking at CMS solutions. Personally I would stay away from joomla, as it is one of the more complex CMS systems going around, but really you should choose whatever one fits your type of site best.

When you say a genealogy site, do you mean something you will be using to write about your family history? Or is it something for other people to find out about their family history?
Will you be adding content often?
If you are simply writing about your family history, and will be updating it as you discover more about your family, a blog format may suit your needs. If you want to do a blog I would recommend Wordpress as it is easy to get started and you can tinker with it as you learn more of its features.
If your family history goes back to horus, then I recommend you don't tell anyone, as you might end up getting a visit from some guys in black suits one day

Maybe google's blogger.com would be a good start for you? It's free, secure and fast loading, at least for me.
