    Default Acer laptop

My parents have an Acer laptop that the puny 20gig hdd is running out of space, problem is there are no large files anywhere that i can find ? They dont do any downloading or installing programs all ove the place so i dont know all the hdd space has gone - a format and re install is on the cards to restore the space and to speed it up as it is a real slug even though it has a 2 gig cpu.

Think about getting a USB External HDD. Just plug in the USB cable and your away.

To clean up all previous restore points in Windows

Open Disk Cleanup in System Tools,

    Select cleanup "System" Drive C

    when Disk Cleanup opens,

select More Options Tab at the Top

in the System Restore (at the bottom)

Select "Clean Up", then click Yes, to are you sure,

    Then Click OK,

    Done.

I do also remember years ago someone had a version of "Norton Systemworks" or something,

that had its own Recycle bin, (hidden)

& it never deleted anything from it, so file size kept growing,

you the had to work out how to delete the contents of the Norton Recycle bin

    Good Luck

old versions of java also had "unlimited cache" could be that also. Download CCleaner and run that through the system.

Once i get hold of it again i'll try all the avice mentioned above and see if i can get some space back. EXT. hdd is not an option as i have had enough ph. calls from them trying to send emails and using the set top box as it is

Also if you have copied a dvd and used dvd shrink you will find movie folders on ya hard drive and they take up around 4 gig each.

I had a friend bring me his lappy complaining he had lost 50Gb of storage,
I remember deleting 50Gb of temp files using "disk cleanup" as OSIRUS suggested in earlier post. You can restrict the size of temp file storage from memory.

I did the disk clean this arvo and gained 6 gig back but there is still over 10 gig used but i cant see where ? , they dont download anything or burn dvd's (like they'd know how to ) store digital photo's or encode video so i cant see what is using this space apart from windows itself.

Did all of the above suggestions and now have 50% hdd space available but the thing still runs like a slug, it only has 256mb ram so i guess this is the main problem will have to open it and see what ram it uses and try and find some more for it.

your missing the point of it all
its a crappy lappy with 20gb drive
they need xp,office 2003,adobe,winzip and IE
you can stuff a 3ghz quad core with 8gb ram in it if you want but it'll still run like shit if the os is borked
    imho
im forever trying to fix troublesome computers
at the end of the day, you can guess what needs doing
