Default Ext HDD not recognised on USB

    Hi Guys,

Has anyone got any tricks to getting external HDD to be recognised via usb. Bought an Ide adapter from ebay and it works irregularly at picking up ext HDD's. I have a sata docking station which does the same thing. Are there any tips on getting around this?

    Thanks

Yes definitely agree with that Woody, The sata via usb seems to connect most times. Even with my esata connection it doesn't always pick up either, but when you restart it certainly does.

What a pain, I was hoping to clone the kids HDD and swap them with larger HDD's but this means will have to reload everything

Make sure the drive is getting its required power (Usually printed on the label).

Hi Zero Alpha, Yes it is, I suspect its got to do with windows as when you use WD software it can see the HDD but not access it.

    Cheers

    Is the drive formatted?

Don't know they were purchased recently as used, so presumably they were formatted when sold by the previous user.

Well it doesn't matter if you are going to "clone" these hard drives. You might need to explain to me exactly how you intend to clone these drives. Also post a screen dump of: computer management>storage>disk management, and i'll be able to get to the bottom of this for you.

Well as i have done numerous times before on my main pc, I run Acronis on the main pc and using their cloning facility and connecting an ext HDD via esata I replicate the main HDD. In this instance I am using one of these and the drive is not being detected.

No point posting a screen shot of disc management as this drive is not detected, so there is nothing to show. (unless you are looking for something else which may help you work this out)

    Cheers

I can only suggest connecting the drive directly to the motherboard.
