Default Start up with two win XP

Just got a Eee Pc 900HA when it starts up comes up with screen with 2 win xp operating sys. If you choose the first one it comes up with error <windows root>\system32\hal.dll can't be found or is missings.
When you choose the second one it start up fine. It has a 160gb HDD portioned into
C drive 80gb (which has the operating system on it)
D drive 60gb (which looks like it had win XP on it as well but now it doesn't)
    The rest is recovery portion
So my question is how do I remove the first entry in the start up screen

Somebody didn't know what they were doing when they had a start up problem at some stage. I bet that both operating systems work fine too. What you can do is correct the fault in boot.ini or delete the non working partition and add the space to the working partition. Both of those methods may be a little complicated for the faint hearted.

If your happy with the setup and just want the non working entry removed you can do that by editing x:\boot.ini (file is a system hidden file). Simply delete the line that isn't working. Make sure that the default setting matches the working line too. If you think you might stuff that up then backup the file first.

You can also do that in XP via Control Panel , System , Advanced , Startup and Recovery , Settings.

    just be a bit careful
the boot.ini and other needed system files may still be in say C:\
even though you have another xp running on say G:\
mine is as i just installed to G becoz C shat (windows\system32\config)
meaning if i format C now, G wont boot.
