Default Getting started with DVB-S on MythTV

    Hi everyone,

I currently have a working MythTV setup with 2xdual DVB-T tuners (Hauppauge HVR-2200) and a single PVR-150 that is connected to my Austar set-top box via the Composite input. This has been, and continues to be acceptable, but I wanted a tighter integration.

I have read that some users here have had success with the Digiwave 103G, so I purchased two of these units. I installed one of them into my production MythTV backend (MythBuntu 9.04 64Bit) and was pleasantly surprised that it was detected on boot.

Unfortunately, that is as far as I have travelled. I have extracted the relevant information from the set-top box (frequency, polarisation, lnb frequency, fec) but I am unable to tune any channels.

I understand that most of the channels on Optus C1 are encrypted, and I haven't started with the soft-cam yet, but I was under the impression that there is one channel on the Austar frequency that is unencrypted, and even if a channel is encrypted, the transport would lock.

It is probably something I am doing wrong as I have never played with DVB-S in a Linux environment before.

    Any insight would be appreciated.

Just out of curiosity... What are the specs of you backend PC?? I assume fairly impressive for 4 x DVB-T and 2 DVB-S??

    Backend machine is a Intel core2quad Q9550 (2.83Ghzx4), 4GB or DDR2 RAM and a Intel 16 port RAID card with 6 1.5TB disks in a RAID6 array.

DVB-T is only intensive on the disk, as the backend does not have to encode anything. It just pulls MPEG-2 off the wire and saves it to disk. Disk IO does take some hammering when I am recording multiple HD channels and watching simultaneously, thats what the hardware RAID is for.

My current Austar configuration gets brought in via a PVR-150, which has an on-board MPEG encoder, so the CPU still does not have to do any work, just save the MPEG stream to disk.

My backend is fairly grunty, but is over-speced for the job. That's my usual motto.

    Just an update.

So far, I have tried scanning using the initial scanning data for Optus C1 in /usr/share/dvb/dvb-s/OptusC1-156E - No transports found

    I added the details I pulled out of my Austar set-top box - Frequency:12478 Symbol Rate:27800 Polarisation:Horizontal fec:3/4

After adding the above details, I tried scanning again - No transports found

I tried setting the LNB type - My set-top box says the LNB frequency is 10700 - The only setting that allows me to scan is "Universal", but I think that is wrong.

I've currently getting no-where fast, so if someone has some sort of insight, it would be a big help.

And just a quick note for anyone wanting to set up a HVR-2200 (Dual PCIe DVB-T) under Linux. In Australia, the DVB-T transmission frequency can be offset by +125Khz or -125Khz. I have the issue that I needed to manually scan using the latest version of w_scan and manually set the transports in MythTV.

Now my cards are working beautifully, but it did take a few weeks of work and much discussion with the v4l driver developers. Steven Toth and Michael Krufky are really nice guys.

Hope this helps someone out there.

Another update, I have had some limited success.

I seemed to have overlooked that using the -l option with the scan program, you can set an arbitrary value. So I just set -l 10700 and I was able to see some transports. Unfortunately, I could not see any transports on 12478000:H:27800000:3/4

Is this the proper Austar frequency and details?

Another update. I have modified my initial scanning data with the information from Lyngsat. For completeness, here is every transponder I found on OptusC1. I can now lock on to channels, and I can move on to the soft-cam.

I am not proclaiming to be an expert on DVB-S. I am just trying to replace my Austar set top box with a PCI card in my MythTV box. This is my first attempt at getting it to work, and I rekon for not getting any help I am doing okay.

What kind of setup do you have?

Do you have some pointers for me?

Saying my hardware is crap is not really helping anyone. I bought them because I read in another post that covert has these same cards and they are working well. Even my local computer supply shop ran into a brick wall when looking for DVB-S cards.

Well done getting this far. One step at a time.

Might have bad news for you... I don't think the Austar card is going to working on a card server. Check the other sub forums on here and see where Austra is at with card serving. You might need to get a Foxtel card to proceed.

BTW Aljazeera works just fine on the 103G's. Thats if you want to watch that..
By reading this, you have already given me control over a tiny slice of your mind

I'm not 100% sure, but I was under the impression Austar would be easier to get working than Foxtel. Austar uses Irdeto2 for their encryption.

I have recently read that you need to pair a card to decoder, or something like that.

Unfortunately since I live in a rural area, I can only get Austar.

I'm a little confused and it is getting late.

Clarification, apparently the Austar STB pair themselves to the card, but the card can be used in any irdeto2 system.

nope Austar no longer use a compliant implementation of the Irdeto2 system - only Austar decoders work with Austar cards
