PDA for GPS

Hi Guys,

Complete newbie to PDA and was hoping someone could offer some advice.

Basically i was looking at buying a cheap GPS unit when someone told me that i would be far better of looking at a PDA and loading up the reuqired software. Problem is i have no idea about it!!

Any suggest:

A good not too expensive PDA
What else i need? I'm assuming some reciever or something
Software

Any other advice would be appreciated.

All i will be uisng the GPS for will be driving mostly in cities.

Mate you need to clarify "not oo expensive"' But anywa an ASUS 636 gofor about$5-600

Look on te ntfor sofware and it has built in GPS reciever and away yo go.

Fo $200 you can bu the dealxtreme GP which is also great

Most PDA's are fine these days for running as GPS. There are just a couple of things to bear in mind when you are looking at which model to purchase.

1. It either needs to have a GPS built into the unit or at least have BT to allow for coupling with a BT unit.

2. If you're only going to use something like TomTom with the PDA, you may want to look at the screen size of the unit and check on the volume output of the PDA (some of the HP's are quite poor in this area)

3. The only other thing to think about, is whether you will be using the unit to do things like Geocaching. If so, you may want the GPS built in for easier portability.

I myself would go for the seperate BT unit. In my experiences, I have just found them to be a little more reliable and faster to track satelites, especially if they come with a attachable ext ant as an option for the car.

Hi,
I have been using the dopod d810 (from Three) which has a built in GPS chipset...works with tomtom and google maps very well. Runs WM6 as well.

I've also used TomTom and I'd recommend it to everyone. It ran fine on one of the Dell Axim x50's & a bluetooth receiver. Compared to a Navman unit I also had, the Axim with TomTom had a LOT more features and was generally easier to use (especially while driving)

This is what you probably want, probably just over 300. Its a PDA, GPS, Phone, Camera & it comes with gps software and an inbuilt receiver. go into ebay.com.au and type in windows mobile 5 + java + pda unlocked

From my experience a dedicated sat/nav is better. I bought one on eBay for $191 INC Postage, and it's great. I recently borrowed an ASUS PDA and tried to set up other maps on it and even though I posted on 3 forums, no one can tell me how to do it, and it appears that putting other maps on PDA's is virtually impossible. The car sat/nav I have has 3 maps on it, MIO (which I like) IGO, and Route 66. See my post asking for help in this section, I only got one reply.

Putting extra maps on a PDA is easy. Check the GPS forum. I have two versions of Australian maps and NZ on my Asus 636

Putting maps on PDA's is easy, I have the Asus 636 running CoPilot 7, Igo8 & Tomtom 7. There is help you just need to use the search function.

The only other suggestion is if you have a suitable mobile phone (Nokia N73, N95 are two examples), you could install GPS software at no cost, only need BT receiver if phone does not have one built in.

I'm running tomtom on a 6120 classic, paired with a BT receiver. Works like a charm...

I have been given a HTC Touch Dual.
Am pretty new to these devices as well, and was wondering if i can
put something like the tom tom maps on it. Do i need a sim card.

I have a HTC Tyttn II with 5 different GPS programs installed and they all work fine

IGO8 appears to be the best of the lot, Never used TomTom(can't seem to get it to start up) but I have Garmin XT, IGO8.0, Sygic McGuider, Ozi Explorer, Memory Map

the distinction of pda,phone,all with gps functionality is narrowing ? maybe for the best.!I have Hp Ipaq with bluetooth good for gps,eg Tom Tom. I have Nokia N95 phone with internal gps an bluetooth,both for TomTom.I have Samsumg Omnia with internal gps,phone, bluetooth again all good for TomTom an pda functionality with windows mobile. Again an Imate with phone ,pda,Win mob. Gps an bluetooth Gps. with TomTom,Igo an others.
As for Metallima original question about basic pda an gps?
an Ipaq pda with WinMob. os.an bluetooth capable,+ bluetooth cheap GPS reciever an a recent Streets sat.nav.prog. as TomTom or other Legit or other found software an Aust. maps.is cheap an multi pda functional.

Cash Converters (Fountain Gate Vic) has a HX4700 (compaq) for $249.00 saw it yesterday. This is the same as mine and I have a compact flash GPS unit for it and it works well. Also have a friend who has the same PDA but uses a bluetooth GPS also wioth great success.
