sounds like the cdrom might be faulty
I have a Toshiba Satellite M100 that's mysteriously lost its CD-rom drive. It doesn't show up in My Computer or in Explorer.
I googled this issue and found a .vbs script that is supposed to magically restore the drive - but to no avail.
I did read somewhere that it can be a problem caused by Nero - or something to do with that - but I can't find where I read it.
I've tried a system restore but no joy there either. There are no CD-rom drives shown in Hardware Profile and a reboot doesn't detect any new hardware.
Does anyone have any bright ideas?

push it in, it has come loose on its connector
Right on the nail there...
I didn't really think about something so simple, or the fact that it could be "loose" by any amount - but I pushed on the tray front and it moved about 2mm in - obviously against the contacts at the back - and now it's back!
Thanks for your fairly obvious (yet not to me) suggestion!
That connector goes straight onto a bus and can account for a variety of intermittent faults.
Should be a klock screw to stop it falling out again, underneath the machine.
