Default Tesltra Next G range extending ???

Trying to help a mate get an internet solution for his boat.
He will be up to 36mile offshore.

VSAT was way too expensive, so Telstra Next G Dongle/Card and 6.2dBi omni antenna seem to be the go.

You can also add an in-line amp, but most seem illegal for use in Australia.
This next product is just such a thing with an amazing claim

"This mobile signal Booster will enable a signal up to 140 km (approximately 87 miles) from the nearest CDMA/3G 850 tower"

I realise there is no guarantees with these kinds of trials, its all a bit of suck it and see. Plus at that distance, all sorts of other issues come into play.

Just wondered if any member here has experience in this field or perhaps uses such a thing?
I have already been warned off using an in-line amp from a friend, as it seemed to cause more issues than it resolved when he tried.

Primary use will be for Internet connection to check weather forecasts etc, but i see it might be very useful for extending his Phone Coverage.

    Cheers

Can he get mobile coverage that far out??? WOW if he can.
I have a tower about 3 blocks from me and if i take the USB dongle away from the window i can tell the difference in speed

And before 3G i used iBurst internet and I was about 8km's away from the tower and again move the modem away from the window it would drop off

Those antennas / aerials will need to have a bit of whack to be able to make it 32 miles, but i suppose line of sight makes a huge difference also

Yeah 36mile is big call with little chance... in saying that, i have a mate down Tassie that has had it work at that distance.

Here is a Telstra Next G map of the area my mate is wanting it to work in.

Seems up to the Islands is no worries, but out east of them will be another storey.
Islands are about 18mile from mainland, reef is another 18 from the islands.

I guess he has to be happy with internet coverage around the Islands, having while out on the reef isn't that necessary.
    But would be nice
