Use resistors at least 47 Ohms to mix the outputs.
DO NOT parallel directly or use diodes.

A video impression of the audio output on your PSP might be useful if the detector circuit is responsive enough and you can see the display in full sunlight.
You might be able to learn to identify patterns easier to discriminate precious from rusty metals and guess their depth. Experienced users can do this with the headphones quite good though.

Doing a digital analysis of the audio signal with the A/D input of a PIC might also be an interesting project.
But first see if the detector is generally worth mucking around with after a field trip.

So I'd be using 4 resistors for stereo outputs with the common points for
    the headphones between two resistors?

    Code:
MP3 Audio out ----\/\/\/--- headphone ----\/\/\/---- Metal detector audio out
One positive if I feed the metal detector audio into the PSP, is I can loop it straight
out of the PSP audio output so there's no funny connections.

I won't wear steel capped boots again
But they were handy to test it out every once in a while, so I might tape a washer to my Nikes.

I found something, and dug a small hole, but still didn't see it.
I intend to return without the metal detector and dig a bigger hole.

I'd be a bit worried about the interference to the metal detector from the PSP. Metal Detectors can be easily affected by electric fields, especially cheap detectors and even more so when the device is actually strapped to it

Yes Art, that is correct with the resistors.

Finding soemthing really small isn't always that straight forward.
You often dig it out without noticing it. So make sure you make a clean pile of dirt and hover the detector over the pile from time to time while you dig.

Good for practicing is digging up old shot gun pellets. The closest thing to nuggets.

Ballbelter, might have a point there.

    Booval had them yesterday.
I would say about forty on display.

Yes I was doing that, I dug about 10cm deep, and maybe 20cm wide,
it's definitely still in the ground.
There could be ppl around, and I'd rather be seen digging without
the metal detector than with one.

I did find some junk, like a foil wrapper, and the like.

Up in north queensland (in the 80's) I had old ppl chasing me with a shot gun.
It was crown land and I could not see a claim.
Later on, an elderly woman came to my tent and apologised and gave me smokey quarz crystals and told me where I could find topaz.

Play around with the discriminator. The foil should disappear. You don't want to waste time with that.

Have seen a guy with a metal detector looking for "treasure" in the sand under swings at the local park.... I think he does a regular round of the parks around the area. Some of the parks now use a thick rubber instead of sand, bet he is cursing...

Default Substitute -Recycle a disk drive part

Get one of the magnets out of an old disk drive and tie it to a piece of string about 500mm long .Swing it about 50mm from the ground at its lowest point and you can feel a tug if a coin it less than 300mm under the ground. Practice and you will get to know the feel.

If you can get two or three magnets glue them (areful)to a board and swing that-brilliant

Huh? No current Australian coin will stick to a magnet.

I'd much rather find something old and unexpected than any money.
Still yet to go and dig that object up. even another old rusty bolt would be a bit of fun.

At least I haven't broken anything yet.
    Now that's HITECH.

Hey Art you still around? I grabbed one of these from Aldi last week and it seems ok for a cheapie. Spent an hour digging up old matchbox/Corgi cars, door locks, roof screws, tin foil milk bottle caps, and assorted other old junk in the yard the other day. Haven't found my fortune with it yet but the yard looks a bit like Gophers have moved in
