Are the display resolution and the STB output resolution matched?
eg: both 720p or 1080i
Do you have the latest firmware installed in the STB?
Today i decided to hook my Tv and HD STB up with Component cables instead of composite.
it worked great for about an hour and the picture was definitely sharper, but after an hour i noticed that the picture was twitching back and forth to the right every couple of seconds,
It really stands out when i put up the epg or when there is a watermark onscreen.
What could be causing it to do this? i dont want to go back to using composite cables but the twitching is giving me a headache/eyestrain
My tv is a panasonic TX-51800P rear projection and my STB is a Hot chip HD2000

I have no idea about the resolution, and i have never been able to find an update for the firmware, Anywhere
i'd say your TV is not capable of showing HD and the setting on your STB need to be switched to SD. Especially with component.
iam a bogan
This may be the issue, so you'll need to check the specs in the manuals of both the TV and STB.
I can't locate a manual for the TV, but I suspect it may not support HD 1080i and possibly not even 720p (eg: it's an SD screen and will only support 576i and 576p) that's why composite works ok.
Once you know what max resolution the screen will accept, you need to set the output of the STB to match.

It's funny how the salesman said it was HD ready. this was about 5 years ago

As suspected.
Your best quality will be 576p component (SD) but should at least be better than 576i composite.
You'll be able to watch the HD channels from the HD STB, but only in SD quality.
Iv'e always been able to watch the HD channels.
why does this say HD if it is actually SD?
YPbPr-3 HD 576P
If you have both the screen and STB set to 576p and it still doesn't work, then it's probably one of those quirky compatability issues, which means you'll probably have to settle for 576i.
Does the screen display 576i ok via component?
as i said. i can only get 2 settings to work, the one i was using which was twitching and the other one which is half off the screen, i could try moving it down in the settings menu.
These are the only 2 that show a picture but the 576P one is half off the screen is blurry and flickers
the 576i one is the one i was using that twitches.
YPbPr-3 HD 576P
YPbPr-4 SD 576i
Have you ever seen a salesman tell you something isnt this or that ready so dont buy it??
When Cable was being rolled out, suddenly all TV's were 'Cable Ready' even if you werent in a cable area and never likely to be.
This was later extended to cover PayTV, 'Cable' became Satellite or 'Wireless Cable'
Today we have the same misinformation regarding the non digital tuner fitted TV's being 'Digital Ready' all because they have AV at least or the more upmarket have Component/Composite inputs.
This applied equally to CRT's and Flat screens.
I cant understand why manufactures/retailers are still selling SD only STB's instead of HD capable, the price difference now is small and if they sold just one format, that would help reduce prices more.
One major Franchise manager said 8 months ago they intended to sell only HD stb's by mid year.
It now 5 months on after mid year and they are still selling SD STB's.
So much for that idea !!!
It appears the new industry buzz word for being 'READY' in advertising is now screens being 'BLUE RAY' ready on some models and so inferring some are and some are not.
This was in a catalog issued by the franchise retailer 'The Good Guys' who are 'Discount' sellers of appliances.
This is the same company that told me they were discontinuing the sales of SD stb's for Digital FTA TV's by 'Mid Year' but they are still advertised in this catalog.
I am sure that the salespitch would be aimed at those stickered rather than those that are not if you were asking about a new set.
I am not suggesting that a salesman would lie but they arent oblidged to answer a question that you dont ask and if you dont ask they wont tell you that BlueRay will work on anything, it just wont have the quality.
Why on earth would you expect a salesperson to offer information you didn't ask for. I get pissed off real quick by salespeople bugging me about things I already know.
If you don't know, that's you choice. Ignorance is a choice. The information about this stuff is in the public domain and readily available. If you choose not to inform yourself, you are also choosing to get conned.
I'd also make the point that saying one thing is "XXX capable" says nothing about other things with no such label. More dumb assumptions. More people that want someone else to be responsible for their actions and the consequences.
You do dumb things, bad shit happens to you. It's how you figure out what's dumb.
I just had a look at page 25 of the manual, which setting do i need to change?
