Default PS3 is it right for me?

    I am getting a PS3 as a rebate from a Sony promo.
I've never owned a game consol so i wanted to know what can these things do? I know they are a bluray player, but couldn't care less for that.
So what are they capable of doing? And is it worth owning out of the box or do they need a whole heap of additional bits & pieces?

    Cheers.

They work pretty much straight out of the box, comes with console + 1 controller

if its fun ur after swap it for a wii, however the ps3 has a lot of (so far) untapped potential. sony are just being tightasses for the moment i think.
i don't feel anything extra is needed to start off with (unlike the 360, e.g. no intergrated wifi) hdmi is a must though. or at the least a component cable. use SPDIF/TOSLINK for audio if you can too.
all i have is the controller it came with, i think the bluray remote is as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike, everything can be done from the controller.
if u need a mouse or kb just use any old usb one they all work afaik even the one from my old g3 imac!
you can stream tv with TVersity or Nero MediaHome, i found mediahome works better.
it's pretty good despite not being able to play ps2 games , but still plays ps1 games.
the ps3 games are still somewhat overpriced, and no real mods about for pirating games, everytime someone finds a loophole... sony releases an update.
without certain updates, some games refuse to run until you update so in that respect we're SOL until sony gives up.
you can download games from the playstation network store as well, suprisingly they are reasonably priced
i've had minimal troubles with mine, overheated once coz it had a pillow on top of it.
can run a few linux distro's too (no access to gpu though as the ps3's os acts as a hypervisor restricting access to the RSX)
but yeah, runs linux, nuff said. i'd go for it!

wow, that was quick. I have the PS3 slim.
It will stay in it's box as I am donating it to a charity auction. It should make someone happy this Xmas.
