If you buy a brand new one tomorrow, more than likely you will not be able to load backups through the DVD drive. USB loaders should still work okay.
Soft-modding okay, its a "free" alternative which is probably the main attraction.
If your happy to wade your way through firmware updates, new games that will require you to update your softmods to get going. Like what happend with sports resort and your happy to take that slim risk of bricking (yes it does happen, some members here can verify that). Its okay,
Much simpler solution is to put a chip in and forget.
WODE should be available in the coming weeks If your after a hardware USB loader.
There is offline files available, follow the guides i posted, as going to 4.0e or 4.1e can be a killer if you load through the net, you will get IOS60-64-v6400
****Warning****
Version 6400 of this IOS a stub, meaning it has no functionality besides simply existing. You will not be able to run any code from a stub IOS. Do NOT install version 6400!! as System Menu 4.0 and 4.1 requires it to function. Version 6400 will DEFINITELY BRICK your wii of version 4.1 or below!!
System Menu 4.2 uses IOS70 now
System Menu 4.1 and lower uses IOS60
So if you try and go to anything other than 4.2 through the wii on the net you will get IOS60-64-v6400 and you are bricked, Offline is the way to go
IOS60-64-v6174.wad is the safe file you want

What's your serial number,
First 5 digits only.
The newer DVD drives will not read DVD-R no matter what brand the disc or type of mod.
You will need to replace the DVD drive board;
Serial: LAH118

Yep
D3-2
You won't be able to boot anything but original PAL through the DVD drive.
You'll either need to get a replacement DVD driveboard or use a USB loader.
what is a USB loader ?
are the DVD driveboard hard to replace?

USB Loader is a homebrew based loader were you can play games stored on a USB hard disk. PITA though with newer tittles and software updates.
WODE is a hardware based USB loader which is uneffected by software updates.
If you want to play anything other than originals through the DVD drive the only way you'll do it is by changing out the DVD drive board.
If you don't mind playing games through a attached HD look into homebrew channel and USB loaders.
