Talking iGO8 for Windows Mobile, CE, PDA & PNA with Australia Map and Extras - TUTORIAL

If there are any mistakes, please PM me to let me know so that I can fix them.
Please notify me of dead links as well, I'll do my best to fix it.

for most of you, it will work the first time, however some of you will have problems,
some minor and some major. All devices are different and you will get many different types
of errors. I can't list all the issues here but I want to ask people to help each other out
and support eachother if someone asks for help. I'll do my best as well.

If there are newer versions of what I uploaded here, please let me know, please dont just say
there is a newer one, please supply the link or upload it yourself. Thanks

    THINGS TO KNOW:
    ------------------------------------------------------

    1) English language only
    2) English voices only
    3) Australia map only
    4) You may need to edit the sys.txt for your device, it may not work straight away
    5) If you get errors or trouble starting the application ask here for help or google it, because google is your friend.
    6) Includes speedcam.txt which is 29kb

WHAT DEVICE DOES THIS WORK ON?
    ------------------------------------------------------

    1) Any Chinese DVD/GPS systems for cars (confirmed working on my Chinese In-Car DVD/GPS)
    2) Any PNA that runs Windows CE 5.0 core
    3) Most PNA devices that run Windows CE 4.2 core
    4) Any Windows Mobile 5.0 or 6.5 devices (confirmed working on my HTC TyTN II Mobile Phone, HTC Touch Pro 2 and mio168 running windows mobile 2003 with CE 4.2 core)

    WHAT TO DOWNLOAD:
    ------------------------------------------------------

    1) REQUIRED - (2009aug13) (software)
    2) REQUIRED - (Australia 2008.Q3 NAVTEQ [081205]
    3) OPTIONAL - (will work without it)
    4) OPTIONAL - (Australia.dem - will work without it, but wont look sexy)
    5) OPTIONAL - (TTS) (will work without it)

    PREPERATION:
    ------------------------------------------------------

    1) OPTIONAL - Back up any previous versions of igo8 data that you may have (eg: poi's, skins, maps, speed cams etc).
    2) OPTIONAL - Uninstall/Delete any previous igo8 versions/directories.
    3) If your CE device / PDA / PNA / Car GPS uses a SD card for the maps and software, then you'll need a SD card reader for your computer or laptop or you can plug your device in via the USB to transfer data that way, depending on your device.
    3) REQUIRED - Have installed.

    INSTALLATION:
    ------------------------------------------------------

    1) Extract [8.3.4.102680_2009aug13_PNA.rar] that you downloaded above (using winrar)
    2) Copy the iGO folder to the root of your SD memory card
    3) Extract the [map.rar] and copy the Australia.fbl and basemap.fbl to \iGO8\content\map
    4) If you downloaded the optional stuff, Extract the [buildings.rar], [dem.rar] & [TTS_LOQ.rar] files to a temp folder.
    5) Copy Australia.3dl and Australia_Petrol.3dl to \iGO8\content\building from the
    6) Copy Australia.dem to \iGO8\content\dem
    7) Copy TTS_LOQ folder to the root of iGO (not the content folder) along with the DLL's (the DLL's go in the root of iGO where the exe is.
    8) Start iGO with iGO8.exe

    That is it ! Enjoy

Just to advise, I am currently running IGO8 on my Samsung Omnia, with no problem at all, and have done so since March. Running WinMo 6.1.

You can add that to your list.

    Thanks for the updated release.

And to update, this version works just fine on the Omnia, too. Can't wait for the TTS, to make it complete!

Also, just to let you all know, each skin allows you to do different things

eg: skin 1 wont allow you to choose different cars, but skin 2 will. For some reason they have different settings available.

does anyone know why i can edit my original post ? the edit option is gone ?

Here is a cool trick that i wanted to add to my original post...

If you have igo and amigo both running on the sd card, open your sys.txt of amigo and type this in

    [folders]
    content="\Storage Card\IGO8\content"

Now you can delete dem, map, voices, buildings from the amigo content folder. This will save heaps of space on your memory card. Basically it just uses the content from igo which is the same anyway (you may need to modify the path according to your device)

Default POIS showing major city instead of suburb.

    Thanks for this guide.
I read it one day too late (Doh) - as I went through this install yesterday before reading your post. I pretty much did as you have suggested anyway, EXCEPT:

I think you need to download and install the LANGUAGE files and the VOICES seperately?

Also I installed a later map: Australia8.3NAVTEQ_2008.Q4_090612.fbl thinking this would be better.

One problem I have is that when searching for a nearby POI, the suburb always displays as "Melbourne", instead of the actual suburb, - the correct postcode displays though.

I am using Australia_ProductB.poi with a timestamp of 8 May, 2008 ... I don't know if it's the map or the POI file causing the problem. Is there a better POI file to use?

    No worries, glad to help..
What do you mean "download and install the LANGUAGE files and the VOICES seperately?" ??

My POI file is 17mb, how big is your Australia_ProductB.poi ?

As said in my original post, could you please direct people to the newer map. Thanks

just tested this version and it seems that the screen only updates like once a second or so. Would IGO run quicker if it was installed onto the device instead of running the .exe from the sd card??
Also a few of the TTS voices dont work. But i must say its the first time ive used the TTS and am pretty impressed Its handy to know the street name your supposed to turn onto without looking on the screen.

Increase your baud rate in your gps settings, start from a low number, then keep going higher and higher until you don't get a gps signal, then go back one of course sometimes it doesn't autodetect correctly

You can't install it on yur device, unless you have 500mb + internal memory ? and even if you did, wont make any difference

Yeah some devices dont like TTS, it could have something to do with the buffer. Try googling "TTS igo8 not working" or something like that, you will get heaps of results

The LANGUAGE file for Australia is called "english_aus.zip" and it goes in the \content\lang folder on the SD card. (note - DO NOT UNZIP the file). If you want alternate languages there are some called "Lang_English-UK_Pda.zip", "Lang_English-US_PDA.zip" or foreign languages such as "arabic.zip" etc also available. Try these links:

    and

VOICE files are different and they go in the \content\voice\ folder on the SD card. Voices can be found at

Of course your selected VOICE file must be compatible with your chosen LANGUAGE file.

If you want text-to-speech (TTS) ie spoken STREET NAMES as well, then that is more involved. I don't think TTS works on CE4.2 devices.

My Australia_ProductB.poi file is 14,287kB ... sounds like you have a newer one. Do you have a link please?

The newer Australian map is Australia8.3NAVTEQ_2008.Q4_090612.fbl

I hope this helps. Good luck, and please let me know where I can get your POI file from.

How the hell do you get a car to replace the arrow? The cars are loaded in and the sys text has the correct (I think) parameters, but still got the arrow there. Any help would be appreciated.
