While I always appreciate Mortscript, some settings can be done directly from the registry (as long as you are careful).

The aforementioned entries that could be updated or to what it looks like they control are as follows:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/MySoft/MainUI/Volume <== this is normally around 4-5 change it to 1 or 0 to eliminate that horrible thumping sound you get when working in the GPS menus.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Power/State <== from here it looks like you can change how the system responds to a restart/suspend command by changing what power state the command initiates at. Look up Power Saving modes in google to determine the different states.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Power/Timeouts/ACSuspend <== Change this to 0 as well.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Power/Timeouts/ACSystemIdle <== Change this to 0 as well.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Power/Timeouts/ACUserIdle <== This will normally be at 30, change it to 0 to eliminate the freezing in TomTom
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Power/Timeouts/BattSuspend <== While most chinese All-in-one radios do not have a battery that they run off of (like a laptop), Change this to 0 as well.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Power/Timeouts/BattSystemIdle <== While most chinese All-in-one radios do not have a battery that they run off of (like a laptop), Change this to 0 as well.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Power/Timeouts/BattUserIdle <== While most chinese All-in-one radios do not have a battery that they run off of (like a laptop), Change this to 0 as well.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/GDI/Rotation/Angle <== appears to be where you can have the screen rotated/flipped to a different angle.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Time Zones <== you can change the names of the time zones in the control panel to something more meaningful to you. Within the Time Zones directory, in plain english in lists every possible time zone, just find your time zone, and change the Key 'Display' to whatever you want to be displayed, and it will update it accordingly.

I also found numerous references to what looks like the chinese language reference number, you could possibly change that number to the english language reference number and it may change the language of the OS. (Completely untested, just a guess).

    ENJOY!!!

Okay, I discovered an unfortunate side-effect to changing this entry, if you change this entry to 0, you will lose the GPS Voice altogether, if you change it to 1 it will remain very quiet even if you turn the radio's volume up and TomTom's volume up all the way. For best results, change this value to 15. That way your GPS voice comes through loud and clear. I am still going to hunt for the 'tick' sound that plays everytime you touch the screen in TomTom and delete it. When I do find it I will post my results, and how to duplicate them on this forum.

    Have a great day everyone!!

Well this bit has me stumped. Downloaded the new maps and the meta file. Generated a Australia-40.meta.dct file which doesn't work. Tried renaming the meta file(s) to Australia-69.meta.* - doesn't work. Tried doing what the video tutorial said - remove excess entries in meta.txt with just the 69 line in it - no joy. Am I missing a step or has no-one tried this since the updated map post appeared?

The tomtom app doesn't even appear in my list like the old Garmin icon did...

I might have to wait until the protect-my-links site is back up and try the Garmin software.

    Cheers

Incase anyone with a htc touch pro (raphael) is having trouble getting the inbuilt gps to work heres how i did it.

I'm using tael's rom v4.23541 (Im not sure if this will make a difference to your settings)
I have turned off the "Assisted Gps" with "Advanced Config"
Select "Other NMEA GPS recever" and set the baud speed to 4800
    Mines using com port 0

I also have updated my "quick gps" program so it's a bit faster to get a fix on the satellites.

Also you will probably want to make a shortcut for it so it shows up with an icon in your program files.
Open up "explore" in Active Sync
Go to the navigator folder on the storage card highlight the "tomtom navigator.exe" and right click and select copy.
Now Go back to the device and go to windows folder, this will probably take a while to load. Now go to Start Menu folder and open the programs folder.
Right click and select and "paste short cut"
Now you have icon in your all programs list, and you can now add the shortcut to where you want on the today screens or folders.

And thanks for the guide Hollowman

Voices for Tomtomo into the folder "voices" inside the folder where the TT executable is located.

G'day, new to the forum... But what a wealth of information! Hollowman, excellent posts. My Dig Options sourced Head Unit (WinCE 5) came with PolNav on it but I now also have IGO8 and TomTom 7.910 running on it. Owning a GO710 and GO720 (the 710 died the week we visited Perth, got it fixed under warranty, couldn't survive a different capital city without SatNav), it was very desirable to get TomTom running... It's nice to have real street numbers (the most annoying problem I found with IGO and PolNav).

I've got two issues... One I'll continue to work on, getting maps to work. When I installed 7.450, it wouldn't recognize the maps. I upgraded it to 7.910, and it somehow recognized the map (v830 - yes, I ran the keygens multiple times, did everything right... Otherwise, it wouldn't have recognized the map when I upgraded to 7.910). But now I can't get it to see 840... I'll try 845 later (when I've access to SWMBO's laptop, with the card reader).

My second issue... Hopefully it's simpler. Every time I start up TomTom, it changes its Port. I'm running 9600 Baud. It only works when I select Com Port 1, but every time I boot, it seems to be running on Com Port 8. In IGO8, I'm running 9600 Baud Port 2 - I don't have an option for Port 2 in TomTom, but it does see the Satellites and locates me on the map with Port 1. Any tips on how to solve this..? Is there a file that I can change to alter the default settings..? Any files will be changed on the PC - the Head Unit has no file management system or editable registry.

Ok - but 7.915 is for WM5+ only, right? Whereas WinCE 5 or older runs 7.910..? I tried 7.915 (QVGA Blue), it didn't want to work... I might just have another go at 840 maps.

Any idea where I'd be able to change the settings for the default COM Port selection?

For CE5 you should be able to find a SD card installer in the forum.
Since Tomtom is a bit outdated in terms of user interface and computer voices it might be a better option to use IGO instead.
Some devices assign a virtual com port for the GPS but even than TT should keep the settings and work fine once installed correctly.
Make sure the modified files are still there after a reboot.

Ok... CE5, the most current installer I found was for 7.910 - I've just tried 7.915 VGA from this thread (my device runs 800*480, or something like that!), it didn't start. So I'm running 7.910. I didn't realize I'd posted in the wrong thread... I've had quite a few of them open in here!

I don't mind IGO, my issues with it are that it changes view all the time (wife doesn't like that - hang on, whilst doing this, I've found the fix...), and the maps don't have real street numbers (the numbers are more like inaccurate lot numbers - hang on, the Sensis 2009 map's improved that, too!), the way that TomTom does. TomTom, well, given I've a GO710 and GO720, we're used to it. It might be dated, but it works well. Well, on their PNA's, anyway!

And I've realized that it is remembering the port, it's just not updating the screen... It does find the satellites. But I can drive half way across Brisbane without it updating the map view. It might give the correct street name every now and then, but it doesn't work as a speedo (it rarely updates the speed), it often doesn't give directions... It's like it goes into a sleep mode - something that IGO and PolNav don't do. It's got 30-32MB of free memory (I'm guessing RAM, I deleted POI's and the number reduced), too... So it's got me beat. I even deleted a heap of POI to make sure it wasn't our of memory, but the RAM message (in with the version info) didn't change. It should have enough RAM to run properly, but... No. Similar to post #60

    Hi.

First time post, so sorry in advance if I have missed the answer.

I have followed the instructions and got TomTom 7.915 working with Australia v830.2290 map and added the extra voices and POIs, however when it runs on my chinaspec all-in-one car stereo it runs slow.

It is like it is using too much memory or something and everything is slow and delayed. An example is I'll type in a new location to navigate to, it will plan the route no problems and start with the initial instructions - but by the first corner the instructions and map start to fall behind and you physically have to wait for the map and instructions to catch back up.

If there are multiple turns over a small period, or the speed limit is high, it is useless trying to use it.

Has anyone had this problem before, or know of a way to fix it? All help appreciated.

    Cheers.

In reply to my previous post, I seem to have fixed some of the lag by removing all POIs (as suggested on gpsunderground).

However, I am still having a few problems with TomTom, whereby it seems to just stop during a route and doesn't do anything until I click the gps strength bars and reroute. Does this happen to others?

How can I fix this, or is this something that TomTom just does - stops and waits for user to reroute if gps signal is lost momentarily or if TomTom stops/lags behind actual GPS location?
