Default is this a crazy idea?

    gday dudes.
in a few weeks i reckon im gonna be upgrading to Win7 and i really wanna keep a bunch of settings and stuff from Vista for the new OS.
my stupid idea is instead of grabbing files and folders here and there and copying them to a safe place elsewhere off the C drive, i might just copy the entire C drive elsewhere and grab them as i need them when i am reinstalling the programs i use.
this shouldnt cause problems should it?
the reason i wanna do it this way is so i have absolutely everything i may need, bookmarks, certain settings in whatever program etc. on hand and really dont have to try to remember all the little bits and pieces and where they are that make shit work the way i like.

good idea but, after you finish getting all the things you want back off the drive, itll need formatting to get all the space back. you wont be able to just delete the windows ect files.
no biggy, also watch out the win 7 config files dont end up in the old partition
think win 7 makes its own hidden setup spot anyway

hmmm, interesting and a good point, i have plenty of partitions so it shouldnt be a drama.
something i will have to remember though.

MS does have a transfer manager - I've used it this morning as my 7 beta is expiring.. It's under Accessories

It seems actually quite good.. you can choose under 'Advanced' exactly what to keep.

I'll let you know how it went, after the reinstall.

easiest way i found was grab a new drive and pop out the other install win7 then drop the other drive in an external case then when you are satisfied you have everything of that you wanted format it and use it as storage.

my main os drive is a paltry 320 gig (and thats way to big) because i keep nothing on it what soever only thing that goes on it is my os and applications i will be using everything else goes onto separate drives.

and drives are bloody cheap i got 320gig sata unit the other day from msy for 50 bucks

if you just upgrade (and dont format and reinstall ) it will keep all your setting if you are that worried. also win 7 will keep all old files in a folder called wondows.old or something like that.
although i would move all my files off the c drive format, install then move back, as phil said it can be a biatch deleting the the old os.
Stop being so stupid.. it’s my turn!!
