    Default O/seas playback on DVD's

Recently a friend sent a region free burnt DVD to the US but it wouldnt play on the DVD player (brand unknown)
The receiver never thought to try it on their computer so we are not sure if it will or not.
    The disc was in PAL.
Another friend who does a lot of downloads said he used to convert these downloads from either AVI/DiVX to DVD but he found his player would run them without conversion so he doesnt bother now.
I did a download recently and found it worked in one player in DiVX format but not another.
I was wondering if a disc done in DiVX would play in a US DVD player or a computer there.

Its odd we can buy from any country and so long as we can unlock the region code it plays but we cant send one from here to run.

Providing the players actually support DiVX.

Apart from zones, frame rates can vary and not all players support all frame rates.

Then there are PAL/NTSC issues and some players don't work with some brands of burnt dics but do with others.

I've had all kinds of incompatibility issues in the past, many with no explanation why they don't work.

Quite often, changing brand of disc works.

Also, +R and -R can be a big factor of incompatibility with different players.

-R is compatible with most players.

Do you mean just the divx file put straight on to a disc? Yes, it'll work fine, in a computer of a dvd stand alone player that plays divx.

As for the Pal converted dvd, more than likely it would/should have been converted to their ntsc format.

I did a download recently and found it worked in one player in DiVX format but not another.
I'm clutching at straws a bit here, but I'm sure there's different versions/levels (?) of divx. So it's possible one player can't recognise a newer format.
A bit like office 2003 being lost when trying to read an Office 2007 word doc.

you will find nearly all dvd players in the usa are 110v only and ntsc only(well the cheap ones anyway). Beacause that's their standard and if it aint american they don't want to know about it......

i suspect the problem is that the dvd is pal..

The US voltage of 110 would have nothing to do with playback as most of our electrical equipment (Asian Made) will function from 100V to 240V, 50 or 60 Hz so power isnt a factor.
I have a Region One coded DVD that I would guess is NTSC because of that and with DVD43 in the computer, it works fine so hopefully a Region Free might play in the US, PAL or NTSC.
Why it occured to me to ask about DiVX is because of those Video cams that use Tape as the recording methode and I think near all of them can plug via AV into a TV for playback.
Also the Lite-ON HDD recorder I have has a DiVX IN for that use.
It just made me think this MIGHT be away around the problem of getting DVD's to play in the US.
    Cant hurt to ask.

Are you sure it isn't just DV?... an in Mini DV.

That's primarily a tape format, but also HDD.

    The pro version is DVCAM.

Uses the same connector commonly used on mobile phones and some MP3 players, etc.
